Am I the only one..?
« on: March 03, 2002, 01:38:50 PM »
To die by fleet ack time after time.
I've already learnt that when seeing nme fleet, turn around, wep, dive, climb, do evasives and...die, everytime. There's absolutely nothing to do. Today at CT I died 3 times by fleet ack, flying above 15kft and seeing fleet too late, fuel hit, BOOM (98% of hits are fuel hits (in D-11), strange). Today at CT I really had it. Didn't see the fleet due the rock solid cloud layer that covered almost whole sicily, so couldn't run in time, ping bang boom! Instant hit through cloud layer (fuel hit of course).
How to change it? Dunno. There's been some "whines" about the field ack, I don't find it any problem compared to fleet ack.

There, 100% pure whine, but I sure feel better now =)

Edit: Taking D-11 to 20kft takes quite some time, and get shot down by fleet ack everytime I enter its guns range unnoticed, sometimes little kind of pisses me off.

Nope you're not the only one.:( I even get in range of it and blam! wing gone. Yesterday in the CT I had a Typh repetedly dive through my fleet ack at me in a heavy F8. It never touched him, and I of course died.

Maybe he had one of those little statues of Jesus sitting on his dashboard? :)

Hehe, got to find one.

Perhaps fleet ack accuracy should be downed from 110% to say 5% for fighters flying above 15kft, I mean if you're in P-47D-11 with 500lbs bomb above 15kft, what harm could you possibly do? Below 15kft accuracy could go up to 110% again.
This wouldn't be any major issue, but climbing half an hour to reach 20kft (this could be compensated with paddle blade prop, thought =)  and get shot down by fleet uber ack gets me pissed off every now and then. I always try to avoid fleets at any cost, but sometimes I just notice them too late.
Oh well, what can we do...

I hardly ever die to fleet ack above 10K.  Maybe 1 in 20 times I fly over a fleet.  Even flying straight and level in a buff, it hardly ever hits me.

Nah yer not the only one, in TOD on friday, i was flyin at 30k doin CAP for our TBM's attackin the fleet, i got a bit to close and **BAM** i'm in tower. Talk about some Lazer guided Flak eh?
talk about your freak accidents, i've flown lazily over fleets many time in huge targets (Lanc's) and never even got ping'd by flak, the one time i fly at 30k in an F6F, ah well.

I have never been killed by AI fleet 5" ack.  I can and do fly through it all the time furballing guys just up the CV and strafing PTs.  Also when divebombing the cardboard CVs with any fighter capable of carrying 2x1000s.  Up at 10-15k, I just cruise along, weaving very slightly from side to side.  Ack bursts all around but nothing happens.  I only get pinged by that stuff maybe once a month, and it's just a ping that doesn't hurt anything important.  The only problem it gives me is the odd frame rate hit.

Player-controlled 5" OTOH is a different beast all together.  There are some guys who can bullseye you when you're WAY beyond con range.  Quite a feat, considering they don't even have tracer to go on.  I wish I knew how they did that.  But you can easily tell player from AI 5" because YOU can see the tracer even if the gunner can't.  And you can dodge it until you start your actual attack.

What kills me at fleets is the 20mm and 40mm ack.  I have yet to survive an attack run unless I somehow con 1 or 2 other guys to go in just ahead of me :).

I flew over a fleet today in a Lanc for 15 minutes, not ONE hit not even a gentle tap.  I finally hit the damn CV just as a typh snuck up on me and took my tail off...
