Compatability problem? Help! :(
« on: March 08, 2002, 10:29:08 PM »
Here's the problem. trying to link my wife's puter (Compaq Presario 7100us P4 1.4) through a linksys ethernet 5 port switch to my cable modem. I get no detection of my wifes puter at the switch. I plug wife's puter direct to modem, no prob, great, fsat connection. Compaq's Customer support is a joke, couldn't help at all. (I don't think the guy really understood what the heck an ethernet switch was for that matter) All he could say is "we have no data blah blah blah 3rd party blah blah blah"

What i tried so far to fix prob:
1. bought linksys ethernet card installed in pci slot next to Compaq NIC card. Win ME never saw NIC card.
2. removed compaq NIC card, installed linksys ethernet card, win detected fine, but still no joy to internet.
3. removed linksys card, installed compaq card, plugged back into cable modem directly, works just fine.

idea i had was to try upgrading wife's puter with my Win XP Pro and seeing if that doesn't fix the prob. I already have called (twice to verify) my Cable ISP to ensure i had IP's for both my puters, so that is not the problem. As i sit here writing this i can think of a couple more things to try but i am getting very close to "pitch the puter through the window" stage, and don't quite want to do that yet. Any assistance is greatly appreciative. if anyone needs more info, just let me know, and i'll re-post with all the system specs when i get home from duty.

, and thanks in advance, for your help

P.S. Makes me want to kick myself. i swore 5 years ago when i made the mistake of buying wife an Aptiva that i'd never buy a pre-built PC again. if it weren't for the fact that 2 days before my 6 month deployment, i was forced to buy wife a PC cause her Aptiva finally gave up the ghost, i'd have been able to stick to it. These are the exact reasons i swore not to buy one again. ^%@#$@$#*&^ Proprietary systems make me puke.

EDIT: Apologies, i think i mighta shoulda put this in "Hardware/Software" or "internet Connectivity" forums... tired, and wasn't thinking.

Have you tried a different patch cable,it could be as simple as a dead cable :)

i see noooo reason at all why this shouldn't work....

did u try the cable from your pc to the hub in your wife's pc?

there are 3 types of cables:  rollover, crossover, and patch cord

for direct from pc to hub, use the patch only.

crossover is pc to pc

Just another idea you can try...
install XP on both pc's 2 nics in one pc 1 nic in the other
run a CROSSOVER cable from 1 pc to the other
hook 2nd nic to the cable modem

use XP's network wizard to configure the netwoork.

cancel 2nd ip..

If you plug directly into the modem and it works, this is due to the cable being a cross-over cable, which will not work when you plug into an Ethernet hub as the hub does the cross-over switch for you and requires a straight through Ethernet cable.

Thanks, Skuzzy, Skurj, and Steely

The cable was the problem. The cable i was trying to connect the wife's puter with was the original cable from my cable co. I went to fry's, grabbed a patch cable and now the wife and i are both living in cable modem bliss. (now maybe i can fly and she'll leave me alone a little!)
Once again, one more reason i love this place, for people like you guys being around and willing to help a guy who "Knows enough to be dangerous" about PC's :D
