What is easier??
« on: March 08, 2002, 01:06:08 AM »
What is easier looking in your rear view mirror or turing your head to look behind you?? The point I'm trying to make is aircraft have mirrors installed to. For a couple of reasons.

1. When pulling high Gs you can't turn your whole head to check your 6.
2. it is easier to just look in a mirror installed above the canopy..
3. it also helps in looking around cockpit frames. The f4u could really benefit from having cockpit mirrors.
But also don't install mirrors on planes that didn't have em.
The real planes had em for a reason and those reasons hold true for AH.

1.  I'm sure this would be quite a performance hit if implemented.
2.  I don't think it would be trivial to implement.  I'd rather have more planes/new features.
3.  Our very flexible view system lets us see what we need to see.  It's not strictly realistic, but it makes up for the limitations we have very well.

Also, one would think those mirrors would vibrate quite a bit and be pretty hard to see out of.

I think the compromise we have right now works pretty well.

Rear view mirrors are probably a non-trivial programming issue.  So if we get them that means that we don't get some other goodie.  Aces high has a generous view system which IMO compensates for such things as lack of rear view mirrors.  And even though it is still not as easy to look around and track things in AH as it is in real life, I don't think the very marginal benefit of having mirrors modelled is worth the cost of whatever it is we will not get instead.

Didn't say we needed em right now. But some planes could use em. (ie F4U, P-38 has that damn bar right in middle of the canopy in the back.) I think its something worth looking into thats all.

BigCrate if you are envision mirrors that you could see while looking forward there are 2 huge problems with them.

1. Think of the size that the mirror would be on your screen, Then envision how what you see now looking forward has to be compressed into that small area, and then how small the objects would be,or more precisly how most planes could not be seen.

2. To make a mirror is realy displaying 2 different views at once, hence you almost 1/2 frame rate.

Hitech you could do it like what AW3 had. The mirror takes up the most screen. Doing like what your talking bout is hard to do. Just make em like when you press the back view on your hat switch. It looks up into a mirror mounted in your canopy and it takes up the whole screen and gives you a view strait behind you.
But view limited to the left or right. all you see is when is right behind you. Damn I wish I had a version of AW3 to send a screen shot to yall to show you what I mean.. I like being able to move the pilot head around!! But you can only move the head around so much. I think mirrors would help in areas of te cockpit where you can't see nothing behind you like in a F4U. I'm not squeaking about this just brain stormin some. :)
