No argument with the fact that the democrats in 1960 were more socially conservative than they are today. In the context of all that has happened in the past 40 years regarding civil rights and the awakening of our moral obligation to accept minorities as equals, this is just obvious. Politically however I am still in agreement with the original post.
Quote

John F. Kennedy:
"The quality of American life must keep pace with the quantity of American goods. This country cannot afford to be materially rich and spiritually poor."

"We dare not forget today that we are the heirs of that first revolution. Let the word go forth from this time and place, to friend and foe alike, that the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans—born in this century, tempered by war, disciplined by a hard and bitter peace, proud of our ancient heritage—and unwilling to witness or permit the slow undoing of those human rights to which this Nation has always been committed, and to which we are committed today at home and around the world."
JFK 1-20-61

Quote

"Dante once said that the hottest places in hell are reserved for those who in a period of moral crisis maintain their neutrality."

yep...see above

Quote

"It is increasingly clear that no matter what party is in power, so long as our national security needs keep rising, an economy hampered by restrictive tax rates will never produce enough jobs or enough profits."

"If the economy of today were operating close to capacity levels with little unemployment, or if a sudden change in our military requirements should cause a scramble for men and resources, then I would oppose tax reductions as irresponsible and inflationary; and I would not hesitate to recommend a tax increase if that were necessary." Dec. 1962

Quote

"...there is always inequity in life. Some men are killed in a war and some men are wounded, and some men never leave the country, and some men are stationed in the Antarctic and some men are stationed in San Francisco. It is very hard in the military or personal life to assure complete equality. Life is unfair."

This famous quote was directed towards reservists in the military who wanted out.

How about this one:

"We can say with some assurance that, although children may be the victims of fate, they will not be the victims of our neglect." Oct. 1963

Quote
"Our success will be measured by the answers to four questions: First, were we truly men of courage? Second, were we truly men of judgment? Third, were we truly men of integrity? Finally, were we truly men of dedication?"

"Never before has man had such capacity to control his own destiny, to end thirst and hunger, to conquer poverty and disease, to banish illiteracy and massive human misery. We have the power to make this the best generation of mankind in the history of the world--or make it the last."

Address to the United Nations General Assembly, September 20, 1963

Quote

"And so, my fellow Americans. . .ask not what your country can do for you. . .ask what you can do for your country. My fellow citizens of the world. . .ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the Freedom of Man. "

No comment...too impressive

Someone adept at buying people's votes while using those people's own money?

;)
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude than the animated contest of freedom, go from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains sit lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen!

Amen to that MrFish and Eagler, and a big salute to Midnight.  My Dad was a Democrat back in the 60s, and he voted for George Wallace for President.  I might add, Wallace was one of the best politicians this country ever had.  He was a master at avoiding the media traps set for him, and served Alabama as Governor for many years.  His wife Lurleen also served, and was a fine Governor.  I believe between the two of them, they were Alabama's governors for 16 years.

I believe Wallace would have been a good President if he had not been shot.  I remember having a styrofoam hat with a Wallace sticker on it when I was a kid.  Think that was in 1962.

Don't mean to diverse from the original post, but was just trying to illustrate and agree with Eagler's insight.

The terms "Liberal" and "Conservative" are poor choices as descriptions of political affiliations.  This has caused an unnecessary rift between the two main parties, imo, and as labels often do, tends toward sterotypes.  We need to dump these terms and come up with something better and more to the point.  I'm satisfied with the terms "Republican" and "Democrat", because they more accurately describe political temperaments during any particular time in history.  There's just no way to say "Liberal" or "Conservative" without putting someone on the defensive.  There seems to be an accusatory tone to those terms, like there's something wrong with being either.  Most people I know are a little of both.
