Don’t those type of things usually load “spyware” on your pc?  That’s what I’ve heard anyway.

No, DON'T use those download accellerators.  All they do is make multiple connections to get the same file.  Sure, YOU might get faster downloads... or not... but either way you slow it down for the rest of us.  In addition, those accellerators really only work well if you are dowloading from a place that has multiple download sites.  In a case like this with a single location, it probably won't speed you up at all.

Also many times servers will be set up to only allow a single connection to stop just this sort of bandwidth use.

Oh, and yeah, they are often full of spyware.

Download accelerators are some of the worst things that have happened to the Internet.

The only speed up you get is by causing a server to send a blast of packets with no interleaved packets for others your way.  This serves to hurt others, degrade the server performance and reduce the number of clients who can connect as there is a limit on how man TCP/IP connections any given server can handle at one time.

Fortunately, any decent admin will limit the number of simultaneous connects allowed, but it does not stop them from happening.

As an ISP I consider these tools to be grouped right in there with SPAM tools.  They are abusive, intrusive, and flat out rude.

In defense of this Download accelorater, i have to say it is a great tool for LAN transfers.

I'll agree that all of the above stated facts are true, it is certainly spam to a web server and a bandwith hog.

But when i use it to transfer files from my linux box, which is loaded with web-server software, to any other PC on my LAN i get amazing transfer rates over the network.. For this reason i highly recomend it.
