I just have one question, because I honestly can't figure this out--

Why do a lot of people equate difficulty with realism?   I see nothing wrong with adding this setup to AH as an events option; there's nothing wrong with having more difficult options available.  If people want it, add it.

But why call it "realistic" just because it's harder?  ICONS aren't perfect, but NO-ICONS is the same as being virtually blind and is anything BUT realistic.  Why not just call it what it is--a tougher difficulty option?

Yeah, jabs right.  Hitech does a great job of using tech to try and return some real world exp. to the game.  Our screens are not 3d (yet) so distance is something we cant really judge right away.  Sure after a while you kinda know how far away something is by its size, but in real life you would have stereo vision and this would be much easier.  So to solve this we have the icon.
Much like the stand up in the cockpit view system, which he explains in another post elsewhere.  If you think this is wrong, go play ww2online for awhile.  In trying to keep with realism (I guess periferal (mangled that one) vision did not evolve till after ww2, cause when you play it feels like your wearing a neck brace!

As soon as we all have 'good' 3d glasses, then drop the icons!

The issue is with the laser range finder. Try it! When you find a lone con and you get into a fight, try taking the icons off before you start shooting. Your gunnery will not be "on the spot" as before because the laser rangefinder is what is actually determining how much lead you aim with, not the actual plane graphic

I didnt say more "realistic" , I said "immersive". Right now you can be in a 50 cal plane , see con at d800 in front of you, close in to d600'ish and start trying to get a shot. Now, 600 yard shots in WW2 weren't exactly run-of-the-mill firing range as they are in AH. If you've seen a plane like the FW190, those things are SMALL. Try hitting something the akin to the size of a mazda miata from 6 footbal fields away.

Alternatively, you could keep the icon but lose the rangefinder when it enters the circular area around the gunsight.

Had some discussions with DM and gunnery issues recently. I can't believe that simple, and practical a solution existed. Guess it's like Columbus' Egg or something :)

I think it's a very good idea, Tac :) Will not be too hard to implement at all..

Concerning people with low-end systems(I myslef have to run AH at 1280x1024), MA should keep it the way it is... but putting in an option for it would make CT vastly interesting. Maybe we can try and compare someone's average hit percentage in CTs with that ot MA using this option.. it could explain a lot.
