JV44,..yes you need to get the updated driver for the card.  That will help and you should run 32 bit as the Radeon runs better at 32 bit than at 16 bit color depths.
Just remeber to do a de-install of the old driver BEFORE upgrading to the new driver.  ATI does a pretty good job of cleaning up.  Just run the ATI de-installer in the Add/Remove Programs folder in the Control Panel.
After it is removed, reboot and install the new driver.

AH uses DirectX, not OpenGL.

Also do not discount HIGHER resolutions!  I run in 1600x1200 32bit with 2xFSAA preformance, and I get 45 average near the ground, 75+ above 10K and never fall below 25-30....even in heavy smoke ....SWEET!

I've never really looked at my bios that closely, if it aint broke dont fix it, and with todays speeds, I dont really mess around much with memory settings and pagewrite settings.

I can tell you Ive got 4x AGP for whatever thats worth, and the card is NOT overclocked.  I run a 1.33  Thunderbird w/256 DDR.  As far as the ATI d3d setup, I just use the minimum smoothvision of 2x preformance with texture compression the only checkbox and zbuffer set 16:24:32 ( I think I added the 32 for compatibility with one game I cant remember).

Site has also saamekind of proggie for Nvidia cards.

Well 2late, in AH you may want to enable v-synch.  Even though your monitor is running at 120Hz scan rates, it is possible for frame spikes to occur in software which could burst past that point causing lost video data perceived as micro-warps and such.

For quake style games it does not matter if you lose a bit of video data due to the nature of these types of games.
