"And they never had the playability or modelling and graphics we now enjoy. I tried flying BigWeek in 1997 on AW, and it never went off! The arenas couldn't handle the numbers. "

Perhaps you don't realize it, but BigWeek in AW was the FIRST time they ever tried to get so many people in one arena (the goal was 1000).  So yes it had some problems.   Although it fell short of the 1000-player goal, it did eventually manage near 600 and was successful in its own right.

AH bigweek, on the other hand, was just another normal scenario with fewer than 400 fliers.

cut the numbers to 300 and Id like to see the screams from the 301st on wouldnt be able to get in!!!!!

Supply and demand rules!

If the community has an average concurrent usage of say 400 in peak times then youd better cater for 500!

The AW Bigweek scenario eventually went off and still broke records at the time. More importantly the AW Bigweek scenario spawned what may have been the most important development ever in online gaming: The Bigweek.general newsgroup.

Those that hang there (still) over 5 years later will understand what happened there. Those that don't never really can.

FIRST POST,
Being new to Aces High and an Air Warrior 3 refugee, it is nice to have a significant number of people in MA, however, it can be overwhelming to deal with the large number of people that where on with the new version(1.09)patch 1 now.
I think that in a couple of weeks things will cool down and the MA will be playable, at least for me.

Exile,

What was significant about the Bigweek newsgroup is that it gained a life of it's own past the end of the scenario, past the end of the AW3 beta, and now PAST the end of AW entirely. Most all the people there play AH now, but that's not the point.

It was a little noticed event at the time.... but that NG was a first, in that a community trancended the scope and walls of "the game" and became an entity of it's own.

There was a point in time that the Bigweek community "decided" that it wanted to live. Take away the server - it found a new one, take away the game that spawned it - no matter.

It's not about AW or even the AW Bigweek scenario. It's about some little quirk of "something" when a group of people decided they would hang together no matter *what*. I'd bet a good about of money that we'll have our newsgroup till we're all dead.

I don't expect you to "get it" so don't worry.....

More not better because the servers cant handle it.

I like the most a server can handle, AH is a very warp infested game.  The servers obviously can't handle this load - as for alternative I have no idea.

Warps are and have been terrible for a long time now.  Large furballs are an excercise in futility.  Warping is simply atrocious when more than 350 on.  Always prefer late night when less than 200 are on.  This is when server performance is not an issue but during squad night or any early evening 400+ just aint near as much fun.

More players = more fun as long as the server can handle it.

My connects with a modem have been very stable recently with the exception of the saturday system-wide wipe outs.

you guys who want bigger maps and less action are avoiding the truth...  Our map is deserted right now.   Yep, more than half of it has no planes whatsoever.   I would not mind a map 10 times bigger than the one we have if it had a protportionate amount of fields added.   Make all the fields about 10% closer together while you are at it.

People go where the fight is.  you want to make it so there is no fight anywhere to "cure" the problem.   It won't help your idea of a good arena to just make it bigger The fights will still be at only a few fields and a larger portion of the map will be deserted.   No one will play with you in a large map either.

Oh... here's a hint for ya... the guys who want larger maps with harder rto find fights think the CT is just wonderfull and exciteing.   Anyone want the excitement of the Ct brought to the MA?   thought not.
