Any one else use padlock?

I've never used it in game, but I started using it with the Film Editor to get point of view changes.

Now I've started using it off line to practise with and it looks promising - any tips?

I fly a spit and never heard anything about padlock view untill now. Thanks, MUHAHAHAHAHAHA

Well, what I've done is change my key mapping to Space bar = target what's infront of you, cntrl/space bar = next target and I've mapped a joystick button to forward view (all hat views remain unchanged, and work perfectly wether you've got padlock on or not).

That way I can tap the space bar to "lock on", and if I get disorientated, or want a direct "straight" view through the gunsight I hold the joystick button down.

It's getting there...

I've a feeling it'll take some getting used to in a furball, but it'll be a killer in a one on one.

Well, as a trainer I sometimes help folks with the padlock feature if they are used to such a thing from other games. Personally however, I don't use it, and I don't recommend it for advanced use. The problem with padlock IMO is that you have no physical feedback to let you know where your view is pointed so you can keep yourself oriented. If I'm pushing a view with my thumb on the hat switch, I know instantly which way I'm looking and where my plane is headed. If I let the padlock switch views for me, I find I get disoriented much easier.

If you find Padlock helps, by all means use it. Just be careful not to get target fixated or disoriented when using it. Also, I find it's easier to become reactionary in a fight using padlock, where as with manual view switching I am more pro-active, predicting what my opponent will do next. Manual view switching forces you to think ahead a bit so you will find the right view. The only trouble can be if you guess wrong and lose sight, it can be difficult to re-aquire with manual view switching.

Try the padlock out yourself. If nothing else, it's a good way to shake yourself up a bit and get out of a rut. Who knows, you might find it preferrable to manual view switching.

I've never tried padlock. I might test it out tho. *shrugs*

I fly Spit Is sometimes now. I used to fly the Spit V all the time, but I got tired of it in the MA. I rarely fly the Spit IX, don't even remember the last time. I dunno, La7s are just more fun than the Spits for dweebery in my opinion.

I think of my thumbs ( 5 key , plus the hat ) as my neck . As one that used to use paddock all the time in two "other" sims , I don't get lost like I used to in paddock in some planes .

hehe paddock players most always like planes that have braces to help them keep themselves orinated . While thumb players like those bubble cockpits .

lol! what part of my post suggested that La7s aren't dweeby? I clearly put the La7 on the same level of dweebery.

I for one fly what I want, and I don't care if it's dweeby or not. I'll run if I want, too. You don't like it? Fly something faster or make me turn. Oh yeah, typing on Ch 1 isn't gonna work, and neither is calling me a dweeb here.

I've got no aversions to tucking my tail and running like a scared mutt, in fact I'm proud of it on the squad channel.

Nifty - who has more kills in the Spit I this tour than the La7!

(hehe, the La7 was for base defense on two occasions, and escorting 3 Mongrels in Lancs on the other occasion. Guess what one plane constitutes all 6 kills in the La7???)
