Which would be fastest...
« on: March 20, 2002, 12:26:26 PM »
I'm debating getting a Soyo Dragon+ with an AMD XP1900+ CPU on it.  Would that be any faster than the dual PIII733 machine I'm currently using as my Unix workstation given the same video, RAM, etc?

I'll use the dual Celery500 for my Unix box if the 733 would improve my frame rate.

In AcesHigh, Frame Rate is Life...

A dual processor system has no benifit running a single thread program (ie almost every game ever made with the possible exception of Falcon 4 and a few obscure others), over a single processor system of the same chip.  IE: dual 733 is no faster than a single 733 for 99% of game and applications.  The real benifit of dual processors comes when you run two programs at once or use high end software that can multithread (photoshop, brcye ect)

So an the Athlon would be much much much much faster.

Makes perfectly good sense to me.

It's only $315 for the combo, and then I can watch my plane disintigrate at a much higher frame rate.  I think HT should pay ME to play this silly thing; I'm just here to improve every one else's score...  :D

2late4you is not entirely correct: you can push all the background apps onto one cpu and your game onto the other. Plus dual-cpu machines are inherently more reliable.

That said, you're going up to 1900 MHz so the background apps should make little difference. It should go like stink.

Actually 1.6GHz.

New system will be Soyo Dragon+, XP1900+, GeForce 3 Ti200, 256M DDR Ram.  I'll get another 512MB in a month or so, after I get my road bike (when you live in Colorado biking and skiing are mandatory).

It will be interesting to see how much better that does then my existing system:  Dell Dimention PIII 700, GeForce 2 Ultra, 640M SDR.

Should have the new system running by the end of next week.  I have a dual Celeron 500 that's unused, so I'll pop that MB out and put this one in.  It's in a full tower with five case fans, so it sounds about like a TF30 at idle when it's running.  Just like old times.  Now all I need is hydraulic oil and some JP5 to get into the proper mood...
