Commandos head to Afghanistan

UK troop move unsettles MPs

I thought Operation Anaconda was a 'Decisive' battle with the words 'victory' attached to it?

Even before Sept 11th, British armed forces were described as 'stretched'. With the 5000 troops in Afghanistan and the proposed 25,000 force to be used against any war with Iraq, I wonder how they're going to cope.

Someday, those blank cheques Blair keeps writing are going to come to an end... or funding will have to be increased - a remarkable thing for a Labour government.

I never heard any of our guys say that.  I did however hear almost all Afgani's say that this was the "big" battle that would get rid of them once and for all.   They've been reporting on the news here that the new RM's going over to Afganistan are going to hunt for mulla D'ohmar.  (thanks btw :) )   I'm sure you guys will be ok.  It might be wise for your parliment to increase defense spending to help pay for all this stuff.  It's in the president's budget over here, hopefuly congress will do the right thing (yeah right!)

I only have what I've read in the papers and on the net but here are some quotes from http://www.bbc.co.uk by BBC correspondents:

"The operation was billed by US commanders as a decisive battle. "

"Some US sources claim to have inflicted several hundred casualties in what was some of the most intensive ground combat that US troops have been engaged in for many years.

But it is impossible to verify what the Americans are saying.

Journalists have had only limited access to an area which is considered still highly dangerous.

And America's local Afghan allies seem sceptical about some of the more extravagant US claims.

Even anecdotal reports from conversations with middle-ranking US officers suggest that many Taleban and al-Qaeda fighters may have simply melted away into the rugged terrain. "
