the 2d ones look a bit cheesy :)

also the spitXIV has a different radiators and air intake below the nose than the spitIX

Was the Griffon engine a OHC, or a pushrod type configuration? If the latter, then you must be talking about rocker cover clearence bulges. In any case, I agree on the 3D vs 2D, and most certainly on the last point.:D

also the SpitXIV air intake below the engine is different than on the spit IX and the radiator housings below the wings are much bigger on the spitXIV

The ailerons also don't extend out as far on the Spit XIV as on the Spit IX.  In the bottom picture of the flying clip winged Spit XIV you can see that the ailerons stop well short of the wing tip, yet on a Mk IX the ailerons extend to the very point where that Spit's wings have been clipped.
