This GROWL thing...?

Well, just got myself a cheap wheel and some pedals to go with it - Logitech Wingman Formula GP.

Sure, isn't the best thing around, but man, sooo much better than trying to use joystick to control a car :).

At any rate, eons ago, I bought Grand Prix Legends. First it sat on my shelf because of my limited puter power. Then because of no joystick. Then because joystick wasn't enough.

Now, however, I find myself enjoying it.

Am a total newbie though, and don't now the first thing about setting up cars, entering corners properly or much like that. All I know is the basic theory of physics involved (heh) in driving cars around :).

Am not very fast on the track. Even though I break as hard as I possibly can without locking the wheels up, the AI guys break at a shorter distance. And then outaccelerate me. Faster top speeds too.

90% of it is my driving, rest is setup I suppose. I found that link with tons of GPL links. Quite useful.

But was wondering if you chaps have anything more specific for newbies? How to isntall additional tracks etc, and what tools to use? There are a lot of tools out there, some that work better than others.

Would be cool if I could get some help on this. Gimme a week toget used to this wheel and pedals thingie, and then say, 20 minutes to 0wn y00 all ;)

Welcom to GPL santa

some addon tracks have a built in installer and install themselves, other tracks have to be put into the track file manually( not hard , just add some lines to update files, the read me that comes w/ track explaines it)

as for driving , you just need lots of seat time to get the feel of the cars, there are lots of setups on the web, some good , some not so good, i try to use a conservitive setup and adj the gears for the track and maybe tweak it a little

hope to see you on the track

Heh John, I am consistently a good 10 sec slower than those faster AI cars.

Just noticed that I drive the F1 GP MODERN way. I want full traction, no sliding etc.

Watched a few replays. Seems like the way to go is to get the tail to slide before entering a curve, and then maintaining the slide with the throttle.

This is bloody hard though. Can do it a few times, but sooner or later I'll end up either overdoing it and spinning the car, or not doing it enough and understeering.

Also, recommendations for a newbie car that teaches you good habits?

hi StSanta,

well i drive GPL now a few years, new people comming every
month to our German GPL comunity. Some are fast from start up
some have big problems, even after a half year, especially to
drive constant without to crash. And sometimes real life Racer
joins us, like this austrian Go-Kart Champ, he instantly drove
lap times i can only dream off ;p He simply understands the
Physics and react the right way. Most error newbies do is to
brake way to late. It is more important to hold the right speed
through the corner. The late braking will come automaticaly
after some practise.

Rules of Thumb.

If you find yourself spinning on corner entry, move brake balance to the front.

If you find yourself spinning on both corner entry and corner exit, stiffen the front bar and soften the rear.

here are some good links with information about how to drive GPL:

and now good luck with your racing career StSanta! ;)
