If I wanted to do???
« on: March 22, 2002, 10:43:41 AM »
If I wanted to make a Flight model of a P-38. How would i go about doing it?? How hard would it be?? What software would be needed?? And if I wanted to fly it would I need to design a P-38 body for it?? And a virtual world?? Give me some ideas for this I been wanted to do this for a while now.. And I think it would be cool to make and put it up on a website so people could could fly it around.

Uh, you need more time and C experance than you'd want or MS flight sim 2002 with the plane editor.

Piece of cake! I mean, folks do it all the time right! So how hard could it be?  Just look at all these other folks with online games like HTC etc etc.  Easy as  __ __  pie!

LOL :)  Honestly. There really nothing to it. All you need is a pixel animator. Paintshop Pro. Version 7.0 works just fine. And you can just make up the FM and all the other stuff because, well, you're the MAN  in charge with this baby!!

I whipped this together for ya in a jiffy. Pro bono ;)   It's basically just the plane with some armament grpahics and a couple of ballistics.  Just add your own uber-38 FM!! We (you and I __) both know that Kesmai, iEN, and HTC have never gotten it right at all. I have implicit and absolutely blind faith that you know exactly how it should fly! I've read your posts here on the "PJ"  and I agree that it should be kind of like an SR-71 in the verticle,  an X-15 on the horizontal, able to out turn a Sopwith Camel and still outdive a meteor (sans any compression effect of course) !

"able to out turn a Sopwith Camel "

In a left turn or a right turn?

ROB, you mismodeled the 38's guns. They fire from the topmost portion of the nose not from below the nose.

;) ;) :D

LOL! Nice ones guys! :)

Seriously BigCrate, it depends on what you mean.

If you just want to "make" a P38 to go into one of the open source sims like MSFS200 or any of the others, then its probably doable for you. Not to mention that theres probably already P38 FM's available for those sims, and you can look at the inputs already there for guidance. So get into the numbers play with them, understand what it takes, and see what you come up with.  Its a fun and quite educational process.

However if your talking essentially about making your own sim dedicated to the P38, then your into a WHOLE nuther world. You have to know a whole lot about programming, designing physics engines, developing your own system to mimic flight (ie the "flight model" as a whole), and then figure out how to get the critical information about an aircrafts attributes into the system. Simple isn't it? Oh and then you have to do the whole thing with network systems, or you can just settle for simple AI enemies, if you want, and little things like terrain and art and ......

Well you get the point.

I suggest you play with some of the open source sims and try to understand what goes into modeling an aircraft first. :)

LOL some of yall are taking this post the wrong.. Bt some of yall are very helpful.. I just make a 38 on my computer thats it.. I want to play around with the paint scheme some. And mess around with the dive flaps stuff like that. Wasn't trying to tell people this is way the 38 flew like and this is how it should be modeled in AH... Was just wanting to mess around with the FM some. I think using a MSFS would be best since I know nothing about programming :).

Cw...if you have CFS2 you can do what you're asking about...i think.  There is a program called Aired that lets you tinker with the flight models and there are a few third party paint schemes you can d/l and then modify if you like. I did this soon after I got CFS2 myself. I made a new folder in the CFS2/Aircraft folder and called it p38h, then copied the contents of the stock p38 folder into it. Then I applied a nice bare metal paint job to it and started messing with the FM. I found the stock CFS2 P38 to be sorely lacking in elevator authority so I gave it some more, along with the few extra HP the H model had. Fixed the ammo loadout too, which was wrong iirc. The result was much more enjoyable to fly than the pig MS was trying to pass off as a P38. I'd give you some tips on using Aired but it's been so long that I really don't remember much about it. Just mess with it a bit and you should be able to figure it out. Thats how I did it. Just make sure you back up the original .air file in case you really mess up the FM so you won't have to re-install. Do a web search on CFS2 and you should find the stuff you need. If you don't have CFS2..then just disregard this post. :D
