HiTech truely hates silly spitties
« on: March 27, 2002, 09:02:19 AM »
I took the Mk. XIV up for a spin last night because it is the new kid on the block. After climbing up to 14k I saw a P-47 below and behind me at 4.5k and diving. I did a split S and hit WEP and gave chase. 2k is as close as I could get, as now we were both on the deck and the -47 was slowly pulling away. Thankfully an La-7 over took me and closed in for the kill, making the -47 take evasive action. I was able to pull inside said -47 and get off a short 90 degree deflection shot. Yes I did get the kill, yes the 14 is manuverable, is it worth 60 perkies? My answer is H-E-C-K noooo, but you be the judge. I'm just happy AH now has something for silly spitties to aspire to and for the rest of us to be able to get that occasional extra bonus perky kill flyin regular ol' non-perked iron. :D

I've done some offline testing with the Spitfire 14 and the results I got are reflected in your post.  Lowish alt dive, from a speed of 200-250 mph (which could indicate exiting a dogfight) showed that the dive and extend was much slower than other planes, such as the La7.  Therefore if you're in a Spitfire 14 and you want to runaway when you lose the advantage then you better think twice!!!  :)

PS  Funked, wanna come back and do some much needed testing???  :)

many of the planes are too expensive. Ta152 and F4u to mention two, Tempest aswell although not that much.

Spit 14 is good, it must be perked but maybe a bit lower price.

A spit 14 should think about running UP.

I Just hate titles like this, they tend to be believed next thing you know im quoted by your title.

You could at ther very minimum make it a question wrather than a totaly untrue statement of fact.

Dont have any any misconceptions about Spit XIV dive acceleration.

British tests showed even the lowly slow Bf109G6 easily out diving the Spit XIV until very very high speeds only then the Spitfire began to close.

I have no doubt that P47D will easily outaccel your Spitfire XIV in a dive.

Any LW plane, especially the 109s will outaccel the P47 in a dive:(

We flying Different sims Frenchy?

P47 accel is not really good, but don't try and come and say that every LW plane out accels it, cause they don't :)

P47 accel seems way too bad though judging from pilot statements.

GRUNHERZ,

Here is what the Brits said about the G-6, Spit 14 dive (and they don't note starting speed or altitude):

Dive
46. During the initial part of the dive, the Me.109G pulls away slightly, but when a speed of 380 m.p.h. is reached, the Spitfire XIV begins to gain on the Me.109G.

That doesn't sound like "easily, until very high speeds are reached".

It sounds like "Slightly widens separation, but is shortly being overtaken and cannot excape".

Now, the Fw190 dives well enough to escape.
