Ideas for Naval element in AH
« on: March 28, 2002, 02:11:10 AM »
Here is a list of guidelines that I think would make a Naval element to AH very easy and extremely fun.

First you need=

AI shipping convoys. These would spawn at ports and would travel a predtermined path to another port. These paths could be changed just like our CV setup we have. Except for the last waypoint, it can not be changed, It always heads to the next friendly port.

Second=

Manable DD's. Use the same model we have in game already add some ash cans and some type of Sonar and were set. These DD's can be controlled by humans. But they would automatically travel along side convoys and TF's, until piloted by a human. Once a human leaves the "captain" posistion the DD automatically gets back in formation with the TF or convoy.

Third=

U-boats. These would not be AI controlled. These would be spawned at ports. But unlike the TF's and shipping convoys these could spawn at different points sorta like GV's at VH's. Not only could they spawn at the port they could spawn at a location say S of enemy Airbase. This would cut back on time U-boats would have to play. But with the miracle of Broadband, I see U-boat kapitans taking thier boat to the other side (maybe 2 or 3 days of travel!)of the map picking off merchant ships and Aircraft carriers.

I know if we had U-boats you would hardly see me in the air. What do you guys think?
There must also be a flyable computer available for Nefarious to do FSO. So he doesn't keep talking about it for eight and a half hours on Friday night!

Nefarious, your wish will come true eventually. :) In http://www.simhq.com interview HT stated that the next bigger gameplay change (or something) will be subs. :) I tried to find that interview from simhq's interview archive but it wasn't there anymore for some reason.

Anyways...jump up and down for joy now...subs are coming. :D

Wmaker, I believe you're referring to the interview I conducted at the 2001 AH Con, which was published in "The Wargamer" at http://www.wargamer.com . Check there, in their archives.  HiTech talks about how he plans to add subs, though the time-table is still up in the air.

Yeah i've read that before. I thought we were going to recieve naval convoys when vehicle convoy's and trains were introduced.

But oh well.

As long as i get my type VII, I will be happy.

Subs, supply convoys, and ASW ops for DDs are all on my list of things I'd like to see.  I've also got a couple other suggestions:

1.  Add a main battery gun director player position to the CA, where the player can operate a rangefinder to nme ships, shore guns, buildings, whatever.  Players in the 8" turrets see a highlight of some sort on the target the director player is ranging.  Also, the range from the director player shows up on screen for the gunner players, so they adjust their elevation to match it.

2.  Add 2 2ndary battery gun directors for the 5" guns on the CA and 1 on the CV.  This would work as above except it would only help 5" gunners, and could be used on planes as well as ships, PTs, and shore objects.

I want a Takao class heavy cruiser.

I'll accept a Nagato or Yamato class battleship instead though.:D

Would like to see something simple done. Seperate the CA & CV fleets for good.

That way the CA's could go in close to the beach to shell and launch the Marines while the CV's kept out in deeper water where they can be defended easier.

Perhaps there could be separate bombardment groups. As it is, Heavy Cruisers were an important part of the Carrier Group's tripleA protection. They certainly contribute to that purpose now, despite the fact that the CA's Bofors mounts do not elevate sufficiently.

I'd like to see some Higgins boats that you can drive to shore. When they get there, they operate as a spawn point for mannable troopers until it is destroyed. That would be a blast....trying to run off a Higgins boat to the town for a capture.

face it, this game changing from just planes to planes, vehicles, boats, and ground troops

its for the better IMHO, I properly wouldn't like flash point as much as I do if I couldn't get in a tank and blow up other tanks

It's your seventh day of sailing and you have just put yourself S of a Knight Port. It's a miracle you got here. You've been attacked twice by Bish and Knight fighters. A Bish Catalina (:)) put three ashcans across your bow and destroyed your deck gun. You come to periscope death to see the arrival of the Knight Shipping convoy. It is being attacked by Bish Ju'88s and TBM's. The Destroyers are under heavy attack. So you decide to put yourself 1000 m off the Western side of the Convoy. The Knight DD's are swirling all around the convoy avoiding Bombs by Bish Ju87's(:)). Just about perfect shot now. You fire a four tube spread. All torps running hot, clean, and normal. The first fish hits the big fat oil tanker in the middle of the convoy. It erupts in smoke but isnt sunk. The second fish misses by inches on the same target. But there are two more heading for the Cargo ship and the already damaged Troop ship falling behind in the convoy. But just at the right time one of the swirling DD's cuts in fron of the torp it keels up and goes down in seconds. Seconds after that the damaged troop ship rolls over and capsizes. Then you realize the Knight CV has just spawned ;)

Oh i cant wait.
