How about if you have possibility to change your icon settings from tower only. You could choose from:
- Normal icons; just like they are now
- Reduced icons (D 3.0 icons)- You will see all nme icons from D3.0 and less.- All nme's see your icon from D3.0 or less.

Seems like it would be pretty confusing, trying to decide which dots were "normal" icons at 6.1K and which were "reduced" icons at 3.1K.

Yes that would be one of the advantages of this system; a surprise. Surprise attacks could even succeed.
Think situation where your country is way outnumbered and you know that almost all dots above certain field are nme dots, in this case you could benefit using reduced icons. Also those who likes to sneak their victims and get them with surprise would use D3.0 icons.
In this system perk planes don’t need any special icon arrangement (if perk plane is using D3 icons that is.)

if your going to do that you might as well make d3.0 icons permanent. why would you want anybody to see you at d4.0 if you can change it?

If you change your icon setting to D3 then nme can't see you beyond D3, but you can't see nme beyond D3 either.
Some folks likes D6 icons and some folks D3 icons. I think major part of ppl would still use D6 icons, but there would be an alternative to those who likes short icons.

Interesting idea, definately worth a try! Probably wouldn't be too hard to program, either.
