That's a good point, Widewing. But I think the whole voice thing is so new to many of the recent influx into AH, that it will take a while for people to get used to using it as it needs to be used.
And it is a good socializing tool, same as the chat buffer, but just as there are ways of taking the chat off the main buffer, the same applies to AHV. When I'm ranging I try to keep all the conversation combat-related, but on our squad channel we occasionally shoot the breeze when we're on a long flight to target or some such.
Is there a place where people new to this can go to learn good radio protocol? It might be worthwhile adding that to the help menus and maybe to the main website (off the community links, perhaps) since it's going to be such an important part of the game.
Here's a conversation I had Monday night: I had just whacked a Bish fighter near 12 and was heading back to the main fight when I spot a SpitV trying to close on my 6 at d1.6. So, I drag him back to my fellow Rooks hammering 12. We're doing about 340 mph as we approach. As I arrive the conversation begins. I do not recall the specific names of the Rooks involved.
Widewing: "Hello Rooks! I seem to have a Spitfire on my 6, could someone give him a proper greeting?"
Rook1: "I got him, Widewing."
Rook2: "I'm in on 'em."
Rook3 "Drag him a bit north and I'll take care of him."
I see one Rook get a good burst into him, but see no visual damage. The Spit is doing some jinking, and he's a bit distracted.
Rook1: "I hit 'em, but he's still comin'."
Rook3: "I'll be there in a minute."
Widewing: "Ok then, I'll just turn around and kill 'em."
Rook1: "Sorry Widewing, he had too much speed on me."
Widewing: "No problem, I'll get 'em."
I turn about 45 degrees down to my right, and vector roll left, dropping me about d.8 behind the Spit, about 500 feet below him. I see Rook1 following a bit back. At this point, the Spitfire pulls into an long loop trying to set up a rope-a-dope on Rook1. He probably never saw me coming and I met him at the apex of his loop, shooting off the wing of his slow-moving SpitV.
Widewing: "Like I said, I'll get 'em."
A glance at the message buffer revealed that I received an assist. Rook1 got the kill, which he certainly earned.
Widewing: "Good teamwork guys!"
Rook3: "Yup, that's exactly how it's done."
Rook2: "Widewing, two F4's coming in at your low 12 O'clock."
Widewing: "Roger, we're on 'em."
Rook1 and I each killed one. Rook2 (or maybe it was Rook3), nailed a Tail-end Charlie trying to sneak in behind the other two.
Voice com allowed us to work together efficiently despite not having any previous experience flying as a team. That makes it worth its weight in gold to me. In my opinion, AH Voice is the best upgrade in 1.09.
Great work HTC!
My regards,
Widewing
