Operation Flashpoint - Coop Players Wanted
« on: April 04, 2002, 06:59:05 PM »
Some of us at Northolt Wing are developing and playing co-op missions on GameSpy Arcade.  We will have a dedicated server going up within the next 10-14 days.  For now we are meeting a few nights a week informally, but we are hoping to put together a weekly mission night where we put on a max effort show.  We are starting with coop stuff but we may go to Team vs. Team missions if we get enough people playing.

Our missions feature combined arms with human players leading squads, driving helos, AFVs, boats, etc.  Right now two guys are making missions.  One is a US Army infantry veteran and the other is a historian who reads a lot of special ops stuff.  So they are generally realistic missions which require a fairly rigorous approach, with discipline, communication, timing, and teamwork.  It's a lot more like an AH scenario than your typical fragfest.

If this sounds like something you want to take part in, drop me an email:  funkedup@raf303.org
Or you can just come looking for us on GameSpy Arcade's OFP Co-Op room.

Hiya Funked,
I've played a little bit, but don't feel I'd be up to speed handling a gun (little play time, and when I do it's usually AH)...

... but I have spent a bit of time in OFP just flying helicopters around; could you use a dedicated heli pilot?

Sounds fun.

Yes we can use helo pilots.
Usually there are troop transport Blackhawks with Cobras supporting them.  Sometimes I have to do double duty, parking my Cobra and grabbing a Blackhawk to extract the squads.  :)
More pilots lets us work quicker and in a more realistic fashion, and even if we have too many pilots it is great fun to be a door gunner in a Blackhawk or a CP/G in the Cobra or Apache.  Just be advised that being a pilot can mean waiting around for the grunts to call for support or extraction.  :)
Drop me an email.  :)

I'm super interested in this Funked... but right now I'm just too committed to AH stuff :(  If you guys will still be soliciting players in a few weeks, I'd like to give it a shot. Might see if Runny is interested as well.

E-mail sent.

OFP is so sweet it makes me want to flip out and chop off heads.

BTW... I've had a dedicated server up for some time (and will keep it going for some time to come)... feel free to e-mail me if you are interested in playing there and I'll get you the IP addy and password.

Well, I'll tell ya, I bought MOD, and man, was I frigging impressed...then Swoop sent me OFP, for the life of me, I just cannot get into it..the graphics are identical to MOD, but for the life of me, I just can't dig OFP like the rest of ya (shrugs). (Guess I'm just stuck in the "WW2-Korea war Era-mentality)  Incidently, I could never get the choppers to work with my joystick (X36 combo) and the GV models were super sensitive with the JS.

Dunno what MOD is.
But I'm sure if you join one of our OFP sessions you will see the attraction.

Some examples:

Monday:  I'm flying my AH-1 Cobra with Mietla up front as copilot/gunner (CP/G).  We've just shredded a Sov platoon that attacked a friendly infantry unit.  We couldn't quite see them, but Mietla flushed them out with cannon fire and as they ran into the open he caught them in a rocket barrage.  As Dinger said, "all I see down here is meat."  We get some intel that the Sovs may have called for armor support so we start patrolling towards the enemy's rear, looking for BMPs or tanks or foot patrols.  Flying along low and slow, using cover, and scanning the horizon.  Then all of the sudden BANG BOOM BANG ROOOOOOOOOAAAAR.  The Cobra shudders and shakes as a huge object goes screaming by.  An Mi-24 has snuck up on us and made a b&z pass.  The master caution light is flashing but we aren't smoking and I still have control.  Our canopy has some holes in it but otherwise we are OK.  So Mietla arms the M197 (three barrel 20 mm gatling gun) and we take off in pursuit of the Hind.  He tries to turn back for another pass but our Cobra is too nimble.  He turns left, he turns right, and we are still on him.  Mietla gets a few cannon hits on him but the heavily armored Hind is not damaged.  The Hind finally realizes he can't turn with us and dives away on the deck.  But we are too close and Mietla is too good of a shot.  A long burst and smoke comes pouring out of the Hind.  The troops in back start bailing out over the beach as the Hind spirals into the water and crashes.

Wednesday:  Coming over the town of La Trinite in my Blackhawk watching Dinger's squad run towards the LZ and pop a smoke grenade.  No baddies in sight.  I flare right on top of the smoke.  Then Dinger on RW "HOT LZ ABORT!!!  ABORT!!!".  Tracer fire comes whizzing by me so close I can hear the bullets.  Yank on the collective and pop up and out of there right as I start taking hits from an LMG.  I can't see who's shooting at me, but they get into a firefight with Dinger's boys.  I duck my UH-60 behind some trees and houses then circle back around where I guess the LMG fire is coming from.  My door gunner calls out "Enemy soldier, 100 yards" and I clear him to fire.   BUDDABUDDABUDDA GET SOME as he kills about half the enemy squad and makes the rest of them run away.

Thursday:  Infiltrating a town with Dinger and Suave in the lead, each commanding a squad.  I'm bringing up the rear in an M2 Bradley.  I'm in the turret and Mietla is driving.  We are staying back because we can hear an enemy AFV in the town.  Dinger and Suave try to ambush the AFV but Dinger's M60 gunner freaks out and opens up, drawing fire from two enemy squads and the AFV (a ZSU-23/4 Shilka).  They manage to stop the Shilka but by the time I can catch up to them, some enemy reinforcements have come, and Dinger and Suave are both dead.  The survivors of their squads fight for their lives, but they are encircled by the enemy and have lost unit cohesion.  The best they can do is take as many enemies with them as possible.

Mietla and I give them support with our 25mm chain gun and our coaxial MG, but an enemy squad sneaks around us and nails us with an RPG.  We are damaged and wounded but still alive.  Mietla hits the gas and we try to get out of there as I frantically traverse the turret trying to find the RPG gunner.  Before I can spot him, he reloads and hits us again.  The Bradley is immobile and burning and we're both wounded.  I know from experience that the RPG gunner is going to reload and hit us again, so I tell Mietla to get out and follow me.  I bail out and run like hell, trying to put the hulk of the Bradley between myself and the enemy.  I hear bullets coming by but I don't see Mietla.  I turn around and he is on the ground.  He is badly wounded in both legs and can't run with me!

I only have three magazines for my MP5, and there are just too many Soviets.  I can stay with Mietla and die or I can go for help and save us both.  So Mietla crawls into some bushes behind the Bradley, I call for friendly armor support (a T-55 tank supplied by the local guerrilas we are assisting), and I run as fast as I can to our base a few km north, where we have a mobile field hospital and a medevac helo...

this is my AAR

...This game rocks! Suave, Funked, Dinger and I played for 3 hours (or so) tonight. We did not do well, but the conclusion was awesome. I was driving Funk's BMP. The RPG got us, Funk got slightly wounded, but I lost both legs. Funk ran to get help, and since I could not, I found a bush and crawled under it. A couple of minutes later a s*tload of ruskies flooded the town, I was hidden in a bush with nothing to do , so I started sniping. Got eight of these boogers, they did not even know who hit them (a cripple hehe).

Funk got some armor to help, and he flew a helo to resque me. It felt just great, all the ruskies around are dead, I can hear a Blackhawk closing in, then I see it... a wonderful sight. I crawl out of my bush to meet him and then kaboom. the helo hits the ground and crashes. So close and yet so far....

I crawled next to the destroyed helo and bled to death...

How is OFP online nowadays?   I bought it when it was released and playing OFP online was a nightmare.  OFP was the laggiest game i've ever played- enjoyed it in single player though.

Something like it's elder brother-
Wing tips rounded, spinner's bigger.
Unbraced tailplane ends it's figure.
One-O-nine F is it's name-
F is for futile, not for fame."

I would really love to get into this game again. I played the hell out of this when it first came out but I agree with thrila. I quit cause all I enjoy playing is multiplayer and this game was a pain in the butt to get going multiplayer. Wish it was easier like Tribes 2 or Jedi Knight II. I can be playing in a matter of like 2 minutes with those.

Actually, I don't see any lag at all. Pretty smooth if you ask me.
