need help with x36 view hat repair
« on: April 09, 2002, 04:32:16 AM »
hello all i also posted this in the hardware section but thought it might get more notice here.

my old x36 view hats are worn to nothin or 3 of the 4 are. my wife took pity on me and said i can replace it with a x45 so i got brave and decided to try somthin i had thought of a while ago.      there are 4 swiches on each of the 2 hats on the stick i figgured to go in and swap them out. well the board that you need to work on to do this was covered in silicon wich is a squeak to remove from the very thin wires used inside the thing but i got that done without a problem ( bout 30 min there is alot of silicon) then the unsoldering of the old swiches and resoldering in their new home went well so im estatic . we can all fix thos old sticks yippi !! but and this is a big but i managed to pull 5 wires of the 15 or so connected to this board out and canot for the life of me figure out how im gonna find wich of the 40 or so solder points.

anyone here got a idea. i searched the net and found pics of the bottom board but nothin on the one where the view hats actuate.

if anyone has a old one they havent trashed yet would you mind takin a pictur of it for me :) or if there is a picture on the net you cant find hats off.

this is what kills about all of the x36s so if i can pull it of probly a cool thing.

thanks for any help

i got it goin , turns out there is another board in the handle. and the wires are labled on both boards i.e.  each has a letter next to the solder point on both. i just matched the wires to their appropriate point and its like i have a new stick.

except the silocon/hotglue they spread all over the boards to secure the wires is a squeak to remove with out ripping out the wires themselves.

not even going to buy a new one seems fine, no one is more suprised than my self. if anyone else wants to fix their worn out hat on a saitek x36 you should do it.

holler at me i will help any way i can .

i used the swiches from the other 8 way hat on the stick right next to the first one(one directly below the flock led . i never use that one really so they were fresh and the old ones really still work they just have  the contact bubbles crushed so i really swiched um.

no i didnt take pics frankly i didnt expect it to work . the swiches are soldered in so to get them out i wedged a small screw driver under them in their seating and losened the retaining clip(just a piece of plastic that clicks um into place). you then hold lith pressure on the screw driver and use a soldering iron to melt the solder points for the swich (there are 2 about 3or 4 milimeters apart) when the solder melts the swich pops out and the rotwiler grabs it . (make shure you have somthing to prop the dogs mouth open while you search for the swiches) fortunatly the swiches seem slobber hardened.

once that is done you just resolder the swiches in their new home. this is tedious as hell but not really hard. watch the dog carfully at this point he has developed a taste for the swiches and will act all freindly in a attempt to swipe them when your not looking or applyin slave to you burnt fingers.

now with all the handleing you have probly broken several of the 12 or so wires leading to the hat board just like i did( you may avoid this by removing the second board in the palm and unfurling the wires some but i dought it the wires are very thin and you have to move the board around so much the flexing will probly do it anyway) . no prob here is the fun part .   you will notice there is another board in the handle . it is held in place by one screw. each wire on the board has a letter (A-B-C ect) simply match them back to their propper homes ( carful about colors their are 2 of every color) and to get to the marking on the board you must remove the hot glue they ave spread literaly all over the inside of the stick. i found a small screwdriver and the soldering iron good for softening it up to be removed . i must stress be calm and have nothing to lose if you have never done this before .  or send it to me hell ill make a project of it for you ) (no guarentee other than i will return the parts for burial at the worst :))

holler if you have any more questions.
