Bombing Runs (Solo)
« on: April 13, 2002, 01:54:16 AM »
Its hard being a bomber do to the lack of manuvering and largeness of the craft.  Its also hard to line up with a town and drop the eggs so that you score a hit.

Anyone have some pointers on a good bomb run and a good newbie bomber to use.

I normaly encounter nme planes and have to auto pilot and switch over to a gun position to defend. And most players sneak in on tail so i chose the bombers that have the tail gun positions.

But i was thinking of climbing about 15k plus and trying to get a good aim on bombs.  At the alt its hard for planes just launching from the field to get that high to counter.  The problem is aiming.

Anyone help on aiming.

I presume you are using the bombsight?  (F6, then hold the 0 - zero - on the keypad to look through it)  Once looking through the bombsight, hit Z and then use the [ and ] to zoom in and out as required.  Zoomed right in, you should have no problem lining up the crosshairs on a target...  :)  Don't forget you can set your salvo to drop any number of bombs at a time, and vary the delay between each bomb.  If hitting a town, set salvo to 1 (.salvo 1) or if hitting hangars, set salvo to 3 if using 1K bombs, or 5 if using 500 lb bombs (.salvo 3 or .salvo 5) as it takes 2.5K to destroy a hangar.  I prefer to play safe and drop 3K.  If you have the delay set to 0.05 (.delay 0.05) they will fall close together and should all hit.

It helps to slow down while over the target field also, so that you can make adjustments needed to line up on various hangars, buildings etc without over-shooting. :)

I personally like the Lancaster, but you may prefer a B17 or B26 to start with - the B17 in particular has good guns and, most importantly, a ball turret to catch anyone sneaking up from below...  :D

Don't move your mouse?  :p  Seriously, although you can still steer from gun/bomb position, it should still stay in autopilot?  Out of interest, are you saying you use the Mouse to fly?  If so, maybe consider picking up a joystick - should be able to get a basic one for under $10 I think...?

A normal alt for bombers to drop bombs at is 20k u can settle for 15k if u dont have time to climb or if target is being CAPed good by friendly fighters

Never try and go under 10k then ack will eat u up and so will enemy fighters do that can dive down to u at high speed

its easy to bomb from alts up to 30k

once you are in the bomb sight, use Z and the [ ] keys.  Zoom right in and you won't miss often at all.

The plane doesn't go off its autopilot EVER if you are in gun or bomb position.
In gunner position your rudder steers the plane.  In bomber position your stick/mouse does

what are u using to control the plane?

Good alt to cruise with bomber is...

Lanca   1,4 k or 1,9 k
B17      1,0 -3,0 k
B26      1,5 k
Ju88     1,6 - 1,7 k
Ar 234  2,0 k
A20c     1,0 k

However, its good to remember that jabo is much better at close range bomb missions...:p

LOL.... oh dear.... well, don't give up just yet, probably just needs practice.  I notice you have only been posting in the forums for two days - are you also new to Aces High?  Maybe it's an idea to learn to walk before learning to run!  :D  I'm sure, in time, you will wonder what you found so difficult...  ;)  In the meantime, you would do well to read this write-up of Eskimo's, which I found very helpful in my early days, and still refer to occasionally:  http://www.hitechcreations.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13980  Hopefully, that will give you a bit more advice on how to succeed in bombing - Good Luck!  :)

Don't know if you know this but....

You can still manuver your plane while in the bomb site.  Moving your joystick from side to side allows you to align with your target.

Pickle your bombs when the x cross over them and you will get a hit every time.

Good Luck!
