I remember seeing a plane about 15 years ago at an air museum that looked sort of like an F6, but was a hybrid with a jet engine in the rear.
Sorry for the vague foggy memory, but I used to be a lot like Udie.

Did such a plane exist?

It was the first jet landed on a carrier, i believe with propellor off.
