But see, that's cool.  I know lots of people do.

I have few problems with it -- it's not my favorite thing, but I won't log because of it.

My problem is with the vocal minority within what you might call the "strat" players who insist on belittling those who prefer to fly fighters and concentrate on shooting down other planes. I took the postscript to Seagoon's post to be a gratuitous slam at these players.

I think night is about an hour the way it is now. I do not mind flying in the dark, but would like to have some way to see the runway when returning to my base. Landing without any indication where the runway is sux. Not being able to see the runway even after on the ground sux even more making it hard to land, then taxi onto the hardtop so as NOT to get the "You have ditched." Message.
After flying in the dark, and managing a good mission (either winning a battle or two in some dogfights, or scoring some good hits on a bombing run AND getting home) only to come home to an almost always IMPOSSIBLE landing on the black invisible runway keeps me out of the arena most night periods. If I could just find the runway in the dark I might fly more at night. Heck, even getting a "successfull landing" making it onto the base without hitting any buildings would keep me in it.
That's it from me. I think you got more than 2 cents worth. Keep the change.;)

More night, less orange!!!

Make it 5 mins of orange as sun goes down, 1 hour of night, 5 minutes of orange as sun goes up, 3 hours of daylight.

No, no.  1 hour of night is too long.  You gotta remember, some of us have real-life resposibilities and can only log on for about an hour or hour-and-a-half on any given night. I really don't want to spend my 1 free hour of play dogging around blindly in the dark (if I wanted to do that, I'd fly MS Flight Simulator and practice instrument flying). Better to keep night the length of a single flight - maybe between 10 and 20 minutes.  That's enough time for strategy guys to get their bombers close to an enemy base, or move a carrier group closer to a target without getting spotted right off, or move some panzers closer in.  It also gives the defending fighters a decent amount of time to rise up a defensive front as the sun comes up.

If night were longer than 20 minutes, I'd seriously lobby for the P-61!

I think HTC noticed that lots of players were logging off when night came.

Night can be fun, especially during fleet battles, but it is not like we are losing any 'realism' by it being shorter.  AH nightfighting is not even close to the way it was in WW2 and I don't think that an accurate simulation of nightfighting would be very entertaining.
