We need an option to keep the fuselage tank unloaded. It's easy to recover from a stall, but it gets annoying in the middle of combat...

You have one--load less than 100% internal fuel

at 75% there is a little bit of gas in the AUX tank, but not much.  At 50% the AUX tank is empty.

if your flying more than 1 sector, load 75%, if you not sure load 50% and drop tanks.
75% will get you to fight and alt with 50% left

I agree, for most ops specifying the P-51D, we load 50% and take drop tanks. Hold onto the drop tanks until engaged. This will give your the endurance you need and the performance required.

My regards.

why doen't it work like that with other planes?

75% and drop tanks.

drain the aux tank first and switch back to the drop tanks. It only takes 3 minutes to drain the aux tank at 75%.when you get into combat you just drop the externals and you still have more flight time with full wing tanks than most fighters have with 100% fuel( and how often do you fight someone with 100% fuel?).

it's the only way to fly the Pony ;)

Personally, I prefer taking 50% and drop tanks.  I always drop 1 DT after takeoff, too.  You get a noticable rise in ROC that way.

I like 50% because I like to turn the pony.  It turns much better at this load than with full wing tanks.  And, when you turn the pony, you usually don't need all that fuel! :D
