Capturing a base
« on: April 28, 2002, 09:50:09 AM »
I saw some squad have captured 3 bases using attack planes.  How is this possible?  Am I missing something?  Thanks.

Yes, it is possible.... all they need to do is flatten the town, kill the acks and drop troops.  Or do you mean they used attack planes to drop the troops?    If it appeared that way, perhaps they had an M3 standing by?

It's too easy to capture a field now, it just leads to players setting up 'missions' where there are no tactics just 'throw heavy fighters until it dies' unfortunately this leads the role of the bomber in AH greatly diminished :(

Erhm... depending on how far back you wanna look, taking a field used to involve killing 2 ack and dropping troops. Then it became killing, I dunno, 8 ack and having to level hangers. Now ya gotta pretty much do that and level an entire town. How is this any easier now?

i think he is talking more about the "gangbang" planner more so then killing the town.

Base capture was harder when you had to deack the whole field then let troops out on the field while fighters/bombers were uppin.

compare that to when it was just 3 ack and buildings.

Now with the "base under attack" and flashing fields base capture has become much harder for a small number to capture a base. So what happens is folks run 25 person missions and just swarm the base and anything that made base capture harder is now offset by the horde.

Agreed, Revvin.  As a bomber pilot myself, I enjoy knocking out the hangars at a field - but of course it takes me longer to get there if I want to be at a reasonable altitude and, more often than not, heavy fighters get there first, leaving me to arrive as the troops are running into the maproom!

The problem is targets are easily destroyed, why can't we have it so the town AND the field need to be flat, beef up the ack so it takes more than one or two rounds to kill them, perhaps even increase the toughness of the hangars up to say 4 or 5k needed, that perhaps would be a little unrealistic so perhaps more target that are about the same toughness of the hangars are now? say have a few office blocks that require 2K to kill them, beef up the town buildings so that a few cannon rounds do not kill them. Perhaps have these require 250-500K to destroy them. The arena is setup for the same fast capture gameplay as Warbirds and look at the unhappiness in the bomber community there. If HTC could make a few changes to make bombers needed in the arena then perhaps they could also snag these WB buff pilots that are so unhappy.

LOL!  I think he's talking about stats guys... a base capture with an attack plane.

SAPO, if you are flying a goon and release your troops... it is possible to exit/die and then replane.  If your troops capture the town after that... you get credited for a capture in whatever type of vehicle you were in.  That is how you get base captures in the attack category.

Flossy, I was looking at the top squad (in attack catagory) and they have 3 captures in attack, 35 in bomber, and 23 in vehicle/boat.  I was just wondering how they got the 3 in attack.

I only have a 73 IQ, so sometimes (well most times) I'm too stupid  to say what I really mean.

Here is the scenario:

You are flying a goon into a base and release your troops.  But since you went to the FDB school of flight, you auger into a hillside trying to figure out how to get out of autopilot.  This happens before your troops make it to the bunker.

You are now worried that the ack will be back at the field you just crashed at... so you immediately hop in a heavy fighter in case JABO is needed.  As you are taking off, you notice that the last of your troops must have made it to the bunker because you get a "map room destroyed" message in the system text.

That is how you get a base capture in the attack stats.
