frame rates
« on: April 28, 2002, 03:15:08 PM »
ok, I am kinda lost at this frame rate issue. I am currently running at 1280x1024 desktop aand 1280x1024 gamepaly in AH. My frame rate usually is at 70-75.  Alot of people are saying they are running at over 100.  Does this truely matter?  Also I am running a Athlon T-bird 1.2, GeForce 2 Ultra 64 with 640 of DDR PC2100 at 85hz, with XP as a OS.  Nvidia display driver is 28.80

So what I am getting at is I cannot get over 75fps regardless of drivers, tweaks or others twists in this world!

Please let me know if anything can help or am I just flying off the edge. I also am upgrading this week to a GeForce4 Ti4600 card.

Do not sweat it dsfire.  Sounds like you have vsync enabled which you want in this game.  Those people reporting high frame rates maybe running vsync off, in which case, they are more likely to suffer from the "rubber bullet" syndrome.

ok, my settings outside AH are 1280x1024, 85hz and high-32bit color.  When i go into AH my monitor (on the monitor menu itself) shows 75hz.........whats up!

As I understand it, that is a bug in the NVidia drivers.  I may not have the entire story here, but others have been using some utility to fix the problem.
One of the NVidia guys is going to have to jump in here.

partial fix.....

Well with the win xp refresh fix from http://www.planetquake.com, and boy was that hard to locate, and finally getting xp to recognize a 85 hz rate i am now at about 145 fps with the v-sync off.  But the same problem with the monitor refresh rate a 75 hz while running the game is there (or so the monitor says).  For further info, if anyone downloads the nvreffix 2.1 file you must also download the 28.90 driver for the detonator series from http://www.nvchips-fr.com/download/downloads.php?Category=10 (nvidias 28.32 driver will not work either). The website is in french, but the download is english.  All other 28.80 and 28.90 drivers for the nvidia cards will not work with the xp refresh fix. The original perosn that wrote the xp refresh patch fix, states his patch will only work with drivers 27.42 and below. I tried and confirmed this.(XP has a default for Open Gl of 60 and Direct 3d of 75 fps no mattter what you select, the patch is a must!!! Leave it to MS to not let you change things anymore) Also you can fix this probelm by looking at http://www.speedy3d.com , but this method requires you to go into regedit and manually set things, not for the novice or even more knowledgeable person!

Install the driver first then run the update patch and set "every resolution to monitors max refresh rate". Reboot the system and viola you can run XP with the refresh rate your system will support.  Also helps to have a tweak progrma like Geforce tweak or RIVA from http://www.guru3d.com afterwards to help things out even more!!  Dont over overclock your v-card or you will be hating life!!

So to end this if anyone can help me still fix the problem with my monitor showing 75hz instead of 85hz even though the desktop and card are running 85hz pleeeeeaaaasssee help me!@

dsfire48,
I use the Detonator 21.83 with the refresh rate fix for XP with no problems on my GF3.  My desktop and AH at 1280x1024x32 and refresh rate of 85.  Most times I am pegged at 85 fps in AH. Properties always shows 85 m refresh rate.

now when you look at the menu on the monitor is it running at 75hz or 85hz, mine says 75hz on the monitor menu, but you minimize AH and look at the monitor again and it is at 85hz.......

dsfire that is caused by the buggy nvidia drivers.

Download the proper driver and nvreffix and you can boost it up to 120hz or whatever your monitor supports.

Be happy youre not stuck to 60hz as it often happens with XP drivers.

I had the same problem and it wasn't related to nvidia. XP has an issue with framerate, it whats to run what it decides. I installed NVRefres and now i run 120-hz all the time. I used 2.0 but it looks like 2.1 is out. Worked like a charm.
Read the instructions first, it's a lil tricky.  Good luck
