Author Topic: How did HTC come to be? (Read 286 times)

I have been part of the AH community for about a year now, and have gathered and inferred quite a bit as to how HTC came to
be. I have become rather curious as to exactly what happened, since I see continual references to various things from the old AH hands. Just out of curiosity, what exactly happened? I gather that most of the staff at HTC were working for Warbirds and somehow there was a falling out over something and they left to start their own sim. It seems that most people think that Warbirds went to pieces after that, you see people saying things like Warbirds was no good after hitech left and things like that. What caused them to leave and what did WB do that caused them to go downhill afterwards. I never really played Warbirds except once or twice on a friends account, and from those few times I will say that AH is clearly way better, so Im glad that HTC got started, but does anybody have any more information on exactly what happened?

HTC= ICI (well HiTech & Pyro anyway)

ICI & DoMark created Confirmed Kill, later to be renamed to WarBirds when DoMark and ICI split. DoMark took the wonderful graphics engine (for it's time) and name, ICI got everything else.

They reworked it quickly, and the next version had a different terrain and name.

From there, ICI was bought out (or sold to by Wild Bill) by IMoL Interactive Magic OnLine. Which, I believe, was a subsidiary or a branch of iEN.

A bunch of stuff happened, more people were hired on to help the development of WB... plus they had to get some other guys on board for Mac Devel and stuff like that.

Dunno the exact transpirings, but the current HTC team (minus Aerilius) left iEN and began work on AH. While iEN still owning WB, began work on reworking it.

And that's where we are today.

All of us worked together at iMagic Online (IEN) except for Aurelius. Things got really wild over there. HiTech left first followed quickly by Pyro and Yankee. About 6 months later, iMagic wanted to move the entire office to Raliegh, NC. Everyone at IMOL didn't like that idea at all; not to mention the direction the company was headed. Fortunately, Pyro approached Ronni, Natedog and I at around that time to start HTC. We opened the doors to the office on April 12th, 1999. The rest of the iMagic Online staff went on to form Cornered Rat Software/Playnet, joined Motor Simulations Inc., or moved on to greener pastures.

The rest is history
