Flew an F4U-4
« on: May 02, 2002, 10:32:11 PM »
First time in a perk plane.  Spent a lot of time tooling around just trying to find a fight, and ended up furballing low and slow over a friendly base that was being swarmed with enemies; got a kill and a prox kill when an enemy augered trying to evade me.  Would have had two more kills except I'm not used to how the -4 flies--the departure behavior is a lot different than the Mustang  :)  Twice I had lead and spoiled my own shot just because it "feels" different from the Stang--some time testing it out offline first may have helped a lot  :)

Ended up losing my perk points, but not because of anything the enemy did--I ground-looped the F4U landing and it slid off the runway.  F4U's are hard enough to land to begin with, and with a framerate less than 10 (lots of smoke and stuff around) it was a lost cause.   Doesn't bother me any--I took off figuring I'd lose the points.

One thing I noticed is, contrary to the standard whines I see on this BB, I was not attacked any more or less than normal.  Perhaps this is due to the fact that I tend to fly on my own (hence I am always being attacked), but I suspect there's more to it--the "icon whiners" THINK they'll get picked out of the crowd, and so when something attacks 'em they assume it's because of the ICON.   I certainly didn't have any special trouble, and I spent most of my flight low and slow under a bunch of enemies.

As for performance, I feel the -4 is worth the price.  It has tons of ammo, superb overall performance, and is tough too.  It has no real weaknesses.

He flies a perk plane once and says we don't know what we are talking about.  Lol.

Occasionally I don't get ganged, but that is very rare.

yeah. take that 4-hog up 10 times in one day. I took the thing up 3 times a while ago and each time had every spitfire and p-51 do their darndest to get me while ignoring others.

Just like when you are sneaking a field and someone comes into the field high and you KNOW he's gonna dive on the goon... if you in a perk plane, that guy will inmediately target you and not check why the heck his field is burning and this perk plane is over it.

Well like I said....I fly on my own a lot...so either way it's not much different for me  :)

Even though I still think the ICON doesn't make that much difference, far less than some want to believe.

You was lucky, try fly it as a main ride for 1 week and then check back to tell :)
The tag are important,  people drop alt from 25k if they hear a fu4-4, spit14, or a 262 is flying at 5 k over one certain base.
And some also rather let a goone drop just to kill the perk plane :D
Im not kidding been using that trick many times for capturing a base 1 guy in a perk and 1 guy in a goone hehe.
Remeber I had 6 enemis trying to catch me in  fu4.4 while we got a then undefended base.
That is my experience after all.

Perk planes can be fun.. If a field is being vulched badly, up a tempest and zoom through the bee's nest getting potshots on the enemy..

After you go below a safe E-level extend, this will bring at least 3 cons after you with watering mouths. Some with a6m, mostly with p51 or la7. Then just extend to a safe territory, wait untill the t&b planes give up and turn away, reverse and kill the greedy SOB that came after you in a pony or lame7.

This can be repeated as many times as ammo / fuel gives in. Mostly fuel finishes after 5-6 kills though. In any case you take out 3 enemies for a long period of time this way. They burn their fuel, spray their ammo and hopefully also rtb to maximise the occupying effect.

er i dont complain about labels or icons but i see peoples point.

if i see a perk plane and a normal one in roughly the same position i'd attack the perk plane :D

pretty much everyone does it im sure.

having said that does it really matter? are we going to make up ANOTHER handsomehunked name for a new category of players?

'icon-whiners' is hardly inspired is it?

who cares? REALLY???
