LOL Sikboy...  "Ever been in the bathroom taking a Mandoble"?!!

I have to clean my monitor off now, jerk.  And my vote for the prettiest plane goes to the 190A- all the A series looked way better than the silly long nosed D series, and the Ta-152 is a travesty.

F6F and F4U get my vote.  They've always had a burly, broad-shouldered, bare-knuckled look that says "Come on boy, climb into my cockpit and let's go kick the hell out of our country's enemies!"

I believe that a plane should look like what it is intended to do. The P-51 is a beautiful aircraft and looks great at an air race. But a plane made for war should look like it. Therefore here are my selections.

Fighter - P-47 Thunderbolt. Big, powerful, ugly and mean.

Bomber - B-24 Liberator for all of the same reasons.

Dive Bomber - JU-87 Stuka do I need to say it??

Thanks, thought that one would go under the radar lol.

I agree that the 190a is far and away better looking than the Dora, or Ta-152. In fact, as far as operational planes go, I'd say the 190a or the F4-U. Both just "look the part" to me. And they look mean, like a fighter should, not "pretty" like the spitfire.

the spitfire is undoubtedly the most 'beautiful' world war 2 fighter.

the thing is all other fighters were designed for fighting only, the supermarine was very much designed to look perfect.
The design was universally recognised as 'beautiful' even by enemy and friendly pilots alike.
add to that the superb handling...and i quote 'you dont fly the spitfire, you strap it on!'

also in a recent book 'combat crews' by john comer he says it was the most elegant looking fighter and deadly in combat.

my personal favourite of WW2 is without a shadow of a doubt the 190 due to the fact it looks like a hunter. It has that 'about to fire' posture and is also among the best of the war.

the p51 just looks like a lumpy mass with odd parts sticking out.
the best part of it in my opinion is the guns in the wings.the rest is fairly ugly as a design for looks. In fact its as plain as a bulgarian pin up :D

The P38 is also a good looking plane because it was so unusual and holds a special place in my childhood in terms of a model i always picked off the shelf.
but to say its the best looking? hmmm
