I came across this little gem last night. It is from the book "Target Berlin/ Mission 250:6 March 1944" by Jeffrey L.Ethell and Alfred Price.
Great read with a lot of accounts from the crews who fought this battle from both sides.
"After he had shot down an Me 110, Lt. Archie Chatterly of the 4 th FG went down to low altitude with Lt. John Godfrey to shoot up a train.Still keeping low, the pair found themselves approaching the Henschel works airfield at Johannisthal on the southern outskirts of Berlin;both made strafing attacks and scored hits on at least one of the new Junkers 88 bombers parked around the perimeter.Shortly afterwards they came upon a train which they shot up also.
Now beginning to run low on fuel,Chatterly and Godfrey headed west for home. They had not gone far when the exertions of the day caught up with Chatterly and he had to urinate.A makeshift tube was carried in the cockpit for this purpose, but before it could be used a great deal of strap-loosening,unzipping and general fumbling was necessary.'I was just beginning to relieve myself when tracers passed on each side of me,converging in front.I could hear the firing and I thought my guns were running away.Lt. Godfrey called to break, which I did without putting any of the relief equipment back in place.'As Chatterly pulled into a steep turn to avoid the assailant his P-51 was hit in the wings and tail and two of his propeller blades were pierced by machine gun rounds.Godfrey engaged the attacker,an Me-109,and allowed Chatterly to pull away;none of the damage impaired the flying ability of the Mustang and Chatterly continued homewards."
