Ping question
« on: May 10, 2002, 06:09:47 AM »
Hi

I'm having troble with very high "ping", and I cant get into MA.

The ping is 280-300 in MA and 170-200 in the rest of the arenas.

I have a cable connection running at 512/128kbps

Does anyone have an idea of what I can do to improve it, or is it nothing I can do?

Also.. Can someone  explain what "ping" is in very simple terms?

thx

OK.. i just ran a trace with ping plotter, and it shows a 70% packetloss on the AH server, and the rest is on different servers on the way to the AH server :(

Post the trace in the Internet Connectivity forum.

Look up your trace for the very first sign of packet loss.  That is where your problem is.  Anything in the trace that comes after that point will be affected by that hop whether it is really dropping any packets or not.

Something might be able to be done, depending on where the problem is.  Please post the trace.  From the edit menu in ping plotter choose "Copy as picture" and then paste it in to Paint and save as a .jpg.  You can then attach that file to a post here and we can have a look and help you troubleshoot.

Oh, and PING stands for Packet InterNet Groper.  Basically it sends a request (ICMP Echo) to another network device, and waits for a return acknowledgement.  It then times how long it takes for that packet to arrive.  PING is how long in milliseconds it takes for the information to get from you to the remote host you pinged, and back.  It's a measure of the latency between you and the host you ping in a round trip.

hi

trying to post the image now, but its VERY slow., dunno if it gets uploaded. have taken to images.. all traces shows that the problem starts at one of several "teleglob.net" servers. In one case it starts in oslo, and in other cases it starts in Netharlands or New York
