I love the F4u-1 but it cant out turn anything, so imagine I just went head on with a zero at same alt as me what do I do? I cant out turn it, I cant out anything it other than run, and yeah I could drag him till he gives up but How Do I get on his tail before he gets on mine in the first place?

First off let me congradulate you on deciding to fly a real plane.

Second let me tell you that I could probably type until tommorrow on ACM tactics in the F4U. But instead I will just give you a few helpfull hints and leave the hardcore stuff for the better sticks in the game. Lephturn is the one I would reccomend contacting. Anyone who can dogfight in a P-47 is worth listening to.

1. Never leave the ground in a F4U-1 with more than 50% fuel. It is more than 80% of the -1D's capacity so unless your on a crosscountry journey don't do it. In fact if you expect to see the NME before you can get to 10K only take 25%.

2. If you plan on dogfighting in one get a joystick with mappable buttons on the top of the stick. Map one to move the elavator trim tab up. When you start to pull hard hit this button and hold it. It will do two things. Turn combat trim off (It will make you stall if you don't) and it will pull you through the turn quicker.

3. Only use combat flaps under 200MPH and then only two notches. Anymore will make accelerating impossible.

4. Always stay faster than you opponant. You don't have to fly 300MPH all the time. Just don't get slower than the guy your shooting at. The F4U sustained turn is poor. But the instantanious turn rate is excellent. Meaning you can kill even against Zeke in the initial 1/4 turn. If you don't get him extend and try again.

5. Read this artical by Leon "BadBoy" Smith.  It is based on AW but the tactics are the same.

When I fight a Spit or a Zeke I usually use this technique.

1. Co-alt Co-Epass nose to nose.

2. He will instantly go max G immelman. I go low G sustained climb.

3. He follows me and stays at about D1.5

4. I get at least co alt again but I have still 250MPH. He used his E and is about 175MPH.

5. I gain more alt until my IAS is about 210MPH and his is about 150MPHIAS but now I have about a 2K alt advantage because my high speed climb is better and he is bleeding E faster.

6. I am already at my minimal looping IAS of about 200MPH so I pull vertical until stall. I drop two notches of flap, use the rudder and wing over. The Zeke is an awesome virtical A/C but he is now shooting and falling out of his stall.

7. Kill him. If you miss extend and repeat. You should NEVER loose this way 1 on 1. The higher you get the better off you are.

Trim won't help u turn faster.  Max elevator deflection is max deflection no matter where you have trim set...

Actually SKurj that's not really tue.

The F4U had elavator trim tabs that were an additional movable surface of the aileron. So max elavator plus max elavator trim is more than just max stick deflection.

You can pull yourself out of compression with them as well.

Turn rate is a function of lift.  Once a fixed angle of attack is reached, wing chord in relation to relative wind, the wing will begin to stall.  The elevator, or elevator trim, only assist in reaching this point.  Skurj is correct.  But if it works for you, then do it.

plus the trim vs surface deflection thing was changed by HT awhile ago.. not sure if it was 1.07 or which version.  But hey..

F4UDOA may be correct that the Combat trim will not keep the elevator in proper trim during a High G turn or in compression.  However, his real-life reference to the moveable trim tab is a bit faulty since the tim tabs he pictures are Anti-Balance trim surfaces which actually move in the opposite direction from the main control surface.
