Game locks after 6 minutes
« on: May 06, 2002, 05:56:06 PM »
Firstly here are my system specs.

Microsoft Windows 98
Second Edition
4.10.2222 A

Dell Computer Corporation
GenuineIntel
x86 Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1
384.0MB RAM

I would play the game (actually be in an aircraft, flying) for what seemed like 6 minutes (could have been 10) bet either way, the game always locked up.  Even in offline mode.

Possible Solution?
This would happen on my GeForce 256.  Now I have a GeForce4 Ti 4600.  Haven't tried running the game because each lockup required me to restart the computer (improperly) which will eventually mess up everything.  I'll try running the game now.

Do any of you have a solution?  I'd love to play the game, even join the community and be an avid gamer, but 6 minutes and a reboot doesn't cut it for me.

Just played and it still locks up after about 6 minutes.  Video card has nothing to do with it then...

Not necessarily.

Have you visited Windows Update and made sure you are all patched up and have DX 8.1?  If not, do so.

What version of the Detonator drivers are you using?  That is often a problem.

Do you have any IRQ conflicts?

You should also clean out between Detonator driver versions with http://guru3d.com/detonator-destroyer/

turn off screensaver...

if its always occuring after the same length of time, it could be the above.. or perhaps u have a device set to go into suspend mode after X amount of time of inactivity.  Joysticks in some systems are not recognized as activity.  Take a peek. Any other 3d games give u the same problem?
Check temperatures too

Elfunko, it could be a heat-related problem causing the lock-ups.

Make sure all your fans are working, and there is good air movement through your case, esp on your video card.

A lot of the newer Dells I've looked at have had IMO terrible cooling.  Take the side of the case off to get a little better cooling and see if that makes a difference.  (A fan blowing into the case AND the side off should verify the problem.)  A heat issue will certainly cause the problem.

If taking the case side off fixes the problem, you need to add some additional cooling.

Well, i have the same problem and this only happens with AH. Only.
There is no problem with Any other game or heavy
program. And this have start from the .2 upgrate.
That means clearly there is not problem with the
systems, its Clearly a bug somewhere in the AH engine.
Ofcourse our common love for this sim make us to
wait for better days.
I think we are the only beta testers who pay for
testing :) but, me personaly i like the try of these guys and i shall wait.
Besides, without this problem, i can stay on line,
fighting many many hours a day.

Your "evidence" doesn't mean what you think it means.  Different games use your computer in different ways, and stress it in different ways.  Just because it works fine with other games, doesn't mean that the problem is with AH.  In fact in my experience, lockup problems can be solved, normally with different video drivers.

Lemme guess... nVidia card... 28.xx drivers?

Let me know what OS, video card, and Detonator driver version you are using, and I can give you some suggestions that could solve your problem.

Oh, and if you have overclocked anything, be sure to turn it back to stock speed first.  I don't care if it works with "everything else".  Everything else doesn't stress the machine in the same way that AH does. :)

I didnt know AH stresses a machine so much.  I play WWIIOL, proabably 4 times the players that AH has in 1 zone at a time.  That game will humble your machine.  I took off the side, and placed my fan (its a big fan, ground level) right about 1 foot away, turned it on high, and tried playing.  Now it seemed like it only took 2 minutes.  Really bites.  I am using nvidia, but it would happen with both video cards.  Happened on my Geforce 256 (very first Geforce card) and now my Geforce4 Ti 4600 (very latest and greatest).  Ill try updating my drivers.  Im using Windows 98.  384 RAM.

Hi there,

I was reading through the boards and saw your post.  I have had the same issue.  I narrowed it down to my screen saver.  For some reason, when it is turned on, and I am playing AH, it locks up my PC.  Try setting your screen saver to "none" and see if that helps.

 Good luck!!

Had a problem like this where cursor would lock up, cumputor would freeze and had to reboot, got lots of good ideas but the thing that fixed in was downloading an up date online for my mouse. It has worked good now over a year. Apparently a conflict with mouse program to AH. Try it because I tried everything else posted here and didnt fix it. The overheat problem usually just kicks you back to the desktop out of the game after about 10 min. been there too! Took side off computor and it was OK, RAJN 1st MAW
