More F4u-1c :-)
« on: January 27, 2000, 04:34:00 PM »
  Hiya peoples,

I realy don't understand what everybodies problem w/ the new hawg is right now.  It's new and its a sweet ride, so of course it will be flown alot.  Maybe if after a month or so it's still the most flown plane, maybe then it's a problem.

As for the plane itself, I realy don't understand what the big deal is.  It dives awfuly burns it's wep out FAST.  It doesn't turn as well as the 1d due to the heavier wing loading, and it seems to stall a bit faster to me also.  The one thing it does have going for it are the cannons, and alot of cannon shells it has too, but not realy that much more than a 190 w/ 4 20mm.  150 more shells?

I fell in love w/ the 190 last week after a 3 year love affair w/ the hawg.  Then the 1c came out.  I just about busted a knutt when I found out and couldn't wait to get home and take her up for a spin.  Well, I still fly the 190. The 190 has better acceleration, higher speed (at least that's my perception) and a MUCH better roll rate than the f4u-1c.  The only thing the 1c does better than the 190 for me is turn and it's a bit easier for me to deflection shoot.

BTW, wasnt the cannon f4u used mainly for A2G?  Can the ack be killed by cannon fire?  this would seem historical to me. AND FUN    just imagine a formation of 8 f4u-1c's flying NOE and straifing the ack at a field before they completely pummle the base after the ack is down.  Or just think about when we get a tank or 2 maybe

Give her a chance she's a good bird, and she needs your love

Oh same problem they had with the P-51...Same problem they're gonna have with the P-38.  Blah, blha, blah.

ROFL!! Hey.. I like Big Blue! First two sorties in her racked 12 kills.. and it's gonna be the King of JABO; kill reports of acks are even now filtering in...

To defeat Big Blue when flying a P51 I've learned to:

Aviod a HO with one
Force 'em to turn
Keep him in front
Climb over him
Pummel his pilot armor with about a gazillion rubber bullits.

In short.. it's a nice plane; with strong points.. and weak ones. Like anything else; flown well it's deadly. Get sloppy and yer dead.

Pyro.. just fix my P51's MG's...

You guys are having too much fun with the ubber-Hog without me!!

I ain't been on for a few days, except a couple of days ago when I showed a friend what AH was about...<didn't fly much>

Anyway, the reason for my post here is that with any new plane people are gonna try it out for a while.  I would think that only a select few will continue to fly it once they get over the "new plane" syndrome.  It happened with the Macchi and Hog-1D when they came out.

Ex.
PS:I love the Hog when I wanna fly a little more sensibly but I often fly the Nik coz it's the action personified furballing king of kings  ...

It's a natural born buff killer, and a vultch-o-matic, but it ain't no dogfighter.

Plenty fun though.

cc that.

Went up in a P51 tonight looking for them (ugh, now I need a shower!) and never saw one. As a matter of fact, all I saw were some well-flown 109's. S! to the Knight pilots I saw!

Would high velocity 30mm be enough?
Theres nothing wrong with P51's armament, just missing computer aim.

Hang you get on the deck with a decent hawg driver (let along a pro), or even at higher altitude and you both get slow by you forcing him to turn he'll chew you up.  I've out scissored many ponies in both the -1C and -1D because they dinnae extend when they had the chance and I wouldna extend because I knew I could take them in 3-4 turns (barring outside interference).  The hawg has better low speed handling than the pony.

Aside from the Mustang, any other plane should at worst have the F4u miss and pull off, it is simply not a good dogfighter.  The reason people fall to it is the same reason people fall to mustangs.  They start chasing someone and don't watch cons dropping from above.  If I see an F4U chasing me, I yawn, wait for him to dive on me then move out of the way.  (I still fly it though, because I like the big ugly blue beast.  Even though I have about as good a k/d in the n1k, and I only use it when taking off from a vultched field.)

It's actually quite fun to dogfight in the F4U if you get forced into it. When you're slow and low, what other choice do you have?   Surprisingly, many pilots fall for the fast roll rate and get completely baffled by fast scissors, perhaps even try to dive under you. A snapshot or two and it's all over.

On the other hand, many pilots will hand you your swiss-cheesed rear every time you try to engage them. It's all a matter of gun leading, timing, perception of the other plane's situation, and a large portion of luck.   But the F4U (esp D) is nothing like as bad a dogfighter as some think.

I like it fine. Seems dominant the way AH is set up now.  Would be good in a scenario I think.

I tried turning with a Pony in the C just to see. Not good. Tried it with a spit two times.  Not good x2. But hey, if u got any kind of e advantage they best watch out the first turn.

Also, I WOULD have had a 10 kill sortie (mostly vulches), but my good friend and squad-mate Udie, got my 10th kill as I ran out of ammo...

Guys, Cave is right !! Done that just the other day, 1 -v- 1 with a pony.....after I killed the B-26 he was escorting. Couldn't touch him at alt, decided to run to friendlies, watched him out run me as I tried to make a ridge line to throw him off for a second ot two. As the range decreased to less than 1.0 I decided there was only 1 way out. I pulled into my break at 500 ft, and dumped flaps as they would drop. 2 turns and I had him, BOOM. I'm NOT afraid to go into a turn fight with a pony on the deck, as long as the E is near even, as I know I WILL win if I get past the first turn.
