Try that against a good pilot and they will simply lead turn you and kill you.

I don't recommend trying the HO except as a last resort. :)  The odds are just too bad.

If I really have a ton of smash, I will attempt a Double Roman.  This is two consecutive immelmans stacked one on top of the over.  Making a vertical s, this leaves me going the same direction as the bandit if it does one immelman.  Ends up being a pretty good rope manuver if it works and if you have the smash at the merge.

Works best in planes that control well at slow speed using flaps.  Flaps are needed to make it over the top on the second immelman.

Good point Mino... this is a staple move for P-38 drivers.  At the right speed, a good 38 jock can pull 3 off no problem.

Here's an excercise to practice controlling your plane in immelmans.  Roll out on the runway, and pull directly up into an immelman.  Try to see if you can get more than one immelman before you stall.  Works best if you get to 200 or so before you lift.  Attempt to do immelmans and loops, and here's the tough part, keep them in line with the runway below.  Film it so you can see what's going on.  This works best in a P-38, but you can do it in any plane.  It's great practice for those stall fighting situations.  If nothing else, you'll learn just how slow you can make it over the top, and when your plane will snap out on you.  It's a great excercise.  Credit to my mentor Worr back in the WB days that first showed me this one. :)

How not to go into an HO
« Reply #18 on: May 14, 2002, 08:14:29 PM »
First of all, if you have lower speed or lower alt. I always dive. I sometimes even dive if I have speed to HO, this saves u and can give you the advantage in turning on his 6. Once in a while I will shoot at 600 and hit his wing off and than pull up, i am usually very steady and I have only died abotu 1 time from this and that wasn't his bullets, I hit him. If you would like to know anymore about the HO just emai me at BlueiceJr2004@aol.com
