Countries other than the "big six"?
« on: March 14, 2001, 01:41:00 AM »
We have the Brazilian P-47D-25 and Finnish Me 109G-2, so what other aircraft are there that could have markings from other countries?

My picks

Australia: Spitfire VIII or Mosquito
Canada: Spitfire XVI
France: Yak-3
New Zealand: F4U-1 Corsair

Can't think of any other countries/planes, but I'm sure others can.

The Romanian IAR-80 would be a nice addition, and might actually be competitive with the mid-war plane set.

Swdish Saab's.

They've always made interesting aircraft, and the company is still existant, so flight data should be possible to find.

I like Juzz's list.

The Romanian aircraft sounds good too.

How 'bout a Mexican jug?

Of course that one's a D-30, and we already have a D-30.  But a D-28 would work.

Here's some stats on the IAR-80. Not great, but it was a 1939 design. Fought until the end of the war, and did quite well. In one engagement in 1944, they managed to shoot down 8 P-38s.

IAR 80C Specifications
Empty weight (lbs/kg) 4850/2200
Max loaded weight (lbs/kg) 6570/2980
Max speed at 22,965 ft/7000m 342 mph/550 kph
 at 14,765 ft/4500m 314 mph/505 kph
Time to 16,405 ft/5000m 6.55 minutes
Range (miles/km) 454/730
Armament 2x 20mm and 4x 7.92mm

I believe the IAR-81 was a little less underpowered; I also think that was the one in that famous massive furball on the deck with the P-38s during the P-38 Ploesti raid.

It really was a quality design from an aerodynamic standpoint, but, of course, Romania had to rely on Germany for engines and they obviously got the dregs and leftovers from them. It was always underpowered.

It was a development of the PZL P.24 gull-wing monoplane you realise(Which was just a P.11 with a new engine and cockpit)...

IAR-81 was a jabo version of the IAR-80 -> same plane with bomb racks.
