BoB terrain query...
« on: May 08, 2002, 01:45:01 AM »
Hi, Sundog!

Spottted the terran was available via the SEA, downloaded it, gave London and the Southampton areas a very quick look-see...

...as a result of which I'm wantng to ask, before I go into critical mode, is that terrain supposed to be accurate (albeit reduced in size), or is it intended to be only "semi-real"?  If the latter, no problem, if realistic, there are some rather large errors, I'm afraid, like Southampton/Portsmouth  being oversized and moved several miles inland to the NE - and being the most important ports on the South coast,  seeing them both portless whilst that hive of old-age pensioner activity, Bournemouth, IS equipped with a port which it doesnt/didnt have...

Ach.. it's just because I've been longing to see a good NW Europe/BoB terrain (covering Brest-Scotland-Oslo, preferably) for ages, and having seen IEN mangle dear old Blighty somewhat, and then the excellent terrains produced here....

-I'm in Mrs Picky mode, aren't I? Sorry! :-}

I did think the textures captured the feel of England in the areas I saw, though - very nice!  And the clouds in a summery sky... :-)

PS: if anyone is wanting to do an accurate terrain that includes Great Britain, I have copy Ordnance Survey maps of the S of England from 1939 (hope to get the Midlands later this year).  If anyone has period maps of northern France, Benelux and Germany, I'd be VERY interested in some info.  Even better if they're LW navigation charts, but ordinary maps would be fine.

Some nice touches in there... destructible buildings about where Westminster is, railway lines... very nice terrain to fly over!

Hi Esme,
I may take you up on this. After helping Sundog with the BoB clipboard map, he really got me interested in terrain editing and texture creation. I'd like to try a very large scale (512x512 I think is the largest) Britain/France/Germany map. Battle of Britain is my favorite scenario/battle, so this would be very close to my heart.

This won't be anytime soon, by the way. Perhaps over the summer.

I'd be glad to help, Dux! I'tll be a long while before I'm able to have a go at terrain creation myself, and what you suggest is something I'd VERY much like to see.  (Frankly, I doubt I'll be much good at terrain creation, but there's only one way to find out... :-} )

Thanks, Esme.

Actually, the terrain creation itself is rather straightforward and easy... it's the Strat setup that's giving me anxiety.

You should just dive in and check it out. The help file is very well done, and within 30 minutes you'll be flying around in a (simple) terrain that you created. It's fun!

I don't read all the threads on the AH boards as I am just trying to keep up with everything I am doing. The BoB terrain is only semi-historical. I only put in a few things requested by the CM corps and tried to optimize it for gameplay in the CT. :)

Nice job, Sundog! Having flown over it a reasonable amount now, it really has given me the feeling of being over England on a nice sunny day... -and despite my preference for as much realism as possible in terrains, I really rather like this one, despite the bits where I know its at odds with the real terrain.

Something I don't know whether many ever comment on, but nice job on the clouds, too!  I really do like the clouds being at a range of altitudes, and occasionally quite low... -looks very good, very real, very England in summer!

I look forward to seeing more terrains from you in future!

Dux, given the info on how the strat system works, I'll be happy to put in some time helping you come up with something doable and hopefully enjoyable for people to use.

rgr on the terrain editor. Where I bouced before (long while back) was in trying to get a fiel created by Ogres Mapmaker utility recognised by the TE. Dunno what I did wrong, but it wouldnt have it.  Since then, Ive had a HD die on me, and my remaining drive hasnt enough room for the terrain data used by Ogres program. It'll be a while before I can afford a replacement HD
