Divebombing in 1.10
« on: May 20, 2002, 10:24:43 AM »
With the new bombdrop rules for 1.10, does anyone have any idea how this might effect divebombing? I recall someone in another post making the case that this (or some other change in the rules) will help people see the advantage of the more "stable platform" of divebombers, vs. Jabo planes. I sorta figured this must have something to do with lower dropping speeds, and the ability to drop at lower alts and still be able to pull out/away. Although I realise that it's all speculation right now, does anyone have any theories about what, if any, effect the new bombdrop variance will have on divebombing?

It won't effect divebombing... IF you already practice the proper dive bombing tactics.

Dive straight in, release when you are low and over the target and pull out. Need 1000ft to arm the bomb... but if you are use to dropping far out.. then your bombs are going to drift further and be less accurate.

That's how I imagine it'll be.

Historically, in World War II, dedicated Dive-Bombers became obsolete; so, without a rolling plane set, there is no reason to take up a dedicated dive bomber to do what can be done better and in a more survivable manner in a Hog or Jug.  And I can't conceive of any (realistic) change to game physics that would cause people to take up dedicated dive bombers. The Helldiver was basically rendered obsolete by American fighters like the Hog that could do the same thing, and the USAF gave up on the dedicated dive bomber concept quite early.

I'd imagine a stuka or dauntless would be a much more accurate divebombing platform than a P51 or Hog.  The issue became survivability to and from the target.  oh and the amount of ordnance once the US managed to mount the big eggs on the fighters.

The dedicated dive bombers will probably be an exercise in futility in the MA, but will play a much greater role in the CT and scenarios
