Ki-61 vs F6F
« Reply #30 on: May 24, 2002, 08:44:30 AM »
Thanks all for the comments regarding the Ki-61 vs F6F.  However, there are more aspects when considering a matchup than just guns and toughness. Unless you are a HO dweeb then that's all you really need to consider. :p When a bandit is 100 yards in front of you it does not matter if they have 8 20mm cannons. They can't hit you when you are on their six.

Hellcat should be faster, better zoom climb. And I'd guess better sustained climb, too. Roll rates? High speed I would give advantage to Hellcat, low speeds Ki-61.

Turning ability will be speed dependant but I'd think Ki-61 would have the upper hand at low/medium speeds.

If anyone can confirm or correct me here I'd be interested in knowing.

In WB 2.77, the hellcat must E fight the Ki-61 and use the vertical. Turn fight = dead F6F. Same in AH or ???

Thanks,

Kekule

Well then I guess that doesn't say much for the f6 pilots in the tests we did .

I plan on redoing the tests only this time with some aces as test pilots to see if the pilot makes that much of a difference .

The Spitfire Mk IX has 1167 kills and has been killed 976 times against the F6F-5.
That is the status from this tour.
In my Spit IX which I fly a lot, the Hellcat is my favourite opponent. Why? He tries to fight close up, and a true dogfight evolves. IMOP the Spit IX is a better dogfighter though.
It was very interesting to carry out the flight trials at Rechlin with the Spitfire and the Hurricane. Both types are very simple to fly compared to our aircraft, and childishly easy to take-off and land. (Werner Mölders)
