Got a question any conspiracey theorists lurking about.
I went down to the lounge aboard the carrier Yorktown to take a break and see if there were any donuts left from the morning.  I found'em and while waiting for them to digest I plugged a movie which I gathered was prepared for tour routes.  What surprised me they boasted of having the builders plate from the cruiser Indianapolis.
It's been my understanding these plates are part of the ship only removed for historical significance if it's known to be on it's way to the scrapper.  Or if by some chance permission is given to remove it so the bulkhead behind it can be painted, help the poor soul who even mars the screwheads if he is allowed to take it down!
I understand the cruiser was sunk by a Jap torpedo.  The Navy didn't seem to know anything about it until days afterwards and by then many of the crew died horrible deaths.
I asked some of the old timers around and they said it was removed before it's fateful voyage so the government could deny it's identiy if it was caught.  Caught at what they couldn't explain, it's just thats what they were told.

Anyone shed some light as to why this plate was removed just prior to it's ill-fated voyage?

I know nothing about the plates being removed, but the Indianapolis was responsible for delivering parts for the "Little Boy" atomic bomb.

It was soon, a few days, after this delivery that the ship was sunk.

A good book on this subject is "In Harm's Way" by Doug Stanton.

Sorry,  I'm aware of it's delivery but was somewhat bewildered by the fact the builders plate was removed prior to this delivery mission and the fact that the crew wasn't rescued for something like 4 days after the ship sunk.  Why did the navy do this? was it a nme torp?  inquiring minds with nothing else better to do want to know :)

Why was it removed?  'they' said so uncle sam could deny it's ID as a U.S. warship in case it was caught.

Im sure there's a resonable explanation why this plate was removed I just don't know what it is.  Maybe what 'they said is true about the denial story.  But what's there to deny if it got caught?  and caught at doing what?  delivering a bomb?  you'd think they would've had a method of disposing of it at sea instead of allowing to fall in nme hands and say to them what bomb?  I don't see no bomb.  U.S. warship? you mean this old thing?

should add that as far as I know these gents could be pullin my leg, maybe the plate was recovered?  ya got me

Same thing happened to the Juneau near Guadalcanal.   Read the book Left To Die:Sinking of the juneau.   The CO knew of the sinking and did not break radio silence to plan a resuce only 10 sailors survived, 10!
