Note the X in the model designation. It was an experimental prototype. Only one was built and it was test-flown only a couple dozen times before it was grounded, used as a mechanics teaching aid, and then scrapped. So it was never "deployed" anywhere. Besides, it's terminally ugly.

Only 1 prototype was built yah....almost as few as how many N1K2's actually entered service ;)

I think 4 37mm cannon give it a charm all its own....

That looks like the in-between the P-38 and the P-61.

Chain Lightning?

chain lightining is a hot lookin' bird (bogart film of the same name was lame) - but there's a ton of cool WWII X planes - - XP-77 (ranger) was designed to turn & burn with the zero (http://www.wpafb.af.mil/museum/research/p77.htm) - there were 2 rangers made for every chain lightning

406 N1K2-Js entered service.  That doesn't include the prototypes like this ugly death trap here.

FYI, there are other aircraft/units in AH that were produced in fewer numbers than the N1K2 and are not perked.

/huuh. The cannons alone could kill a B-17 one hit. So, why does it need the 50 cals. :D

Does anybody else think the XP-77 looked like a crop duster?

At least a couple of those .50's would be for that back gunner to shoot his tail off ;)
