F6F dominates all. The Hellcat can take damage like no other, carries the most 50 cals other than P47 with 2400. It can carry 6 rocks and 2 x 1K bombs, which is excellent. Its turning ability is awesome!  It dives really quickly. Level flight may not be that good, but it can turn with pretty much everything. I have outturned an A6M many times in an F6F. If this isn't the fastest fighter, it has a great roll rate with speed, turns great and can fight with the best of them. P51, P38, P47.

as much as I like the jugs and the hellkittens, I must admit that the best all around fighter in AH is the......
P-38L !

flew it a bit last tour, and it's a monster!! :eek:
builds E fast enough, turns well for an E fighter, zoom is great, big load, good range, good guns, good alt preformance, rugged as a tank....

I'd have to say the P-38L Lightning or Typhoon Mk Ib.

Perk planes aren't because they can't be used in the ground attack role by anybody who hasn't got gobs of perk points.

I have to chime in on the side of the F6F.  Does everything but speed well.  (P-38 ranks up there as well.)

P38 coz it outclimbs all fully loaded and so it is mostly first on target

it also carries a cannon wich helps in jabo.

and can lose an engine while deacking :)

great use as fighter as well

The Yak is one of the best fighters in the game. Doesn't get a great deal of use, largely due to its light gun package. Nonetheless, fly it to its potential and it a very dangerous adversary for any fighter in the game.

I must point out that the Yak is a premier killer of the Mustang. I'm 9/0 against the Mustang while flying the Yak-9U, 50/7 against all types in the Yak. For than matter, I went 62/7 against the P-51 in this tour.

Now, as an all around fighter, the Mustang beats the Yak due to the Yak not having any provision for ordnance. However, as a pure fighter, the Yak wins hands down.

The Yak-9U has 458 kills and has been killed 382 times against the P-51D.

The Yak-9U has 49 kills and has been killed 35 times against the P-51B.
