You also mentioned you went down while the other guy looped up..

That means you gained speed in dive while the other guy slowed down in vertical thus reducing his turn radius. If you made a split-s after the merge and he made an immelman, you're instantly in a losing position if you try to complete the split-s into a loop in order to get a shot at him.
