My take on the last frame
« on: June 09, 2002, 03:13:35 PM »
I have some real problems with the last 2 tods. It seems lag has gotten so bad that for the 1st 45 min into the frames its a major lag/warp fest.

I know this cant be addressed by the cms but has anyone be in touch with Skuzzy over this?

Take this as an example

3./JG2 lost 4 guys to a lone warp/lagging b17

heres the list

Leitwolf
Urchin
Raubvgl
Reschke

The b17 was alone he was engaged by 6 of 3./JG2. Soviet got the kill on him.

Now I am not trying to sound whiney but none of these guys are amatures. 2 of my guys discoed with in 15 min in. We never got into the huge furballs but I can imagine the warp feast it must have been.

Also we engaged another lone buff 3 on 1. I come screaming in dive below his 8 o'clock to 2 k under then proceed to zoom up for a 3cm shot to the belly. As I close within d700 the b17 warps ahead 600 yards so my zoom to the belly puts me d600 centered in his tail gun. My eng was knocked out but luckily the rest of my guys killed the b17 and I ended up bailing.

What could be the cause? In BoB all three frames were laggy/warpy but it was real bad in the 1st frame.

Is there any setting to disable the auto updating of the terrain? Folks should be forced to dl the terrain from the htc webpage. The squad cos should make it a point to link the terrain addy in their squad bbs/emails prior to game day.

Also could ahv being causing a reduction in bandwidth? will 200 folks all chatting back and forth over ahv  aid in the lag/warps?

I see where the cms are addressing the 32 plane limit. Thats great but we had 11 109s attacking 1 b17 to lose 4 of umm to warp/lag is a bit much. The reason I am posting this is some of my squaddies cant get real exited about the next one with this type of lag.

Any body have any ideas?

Was it just me and my guys that had this problem?

I love tod they are great fun but with under 200 guys in a frame and the lag as bad as it was something needs to be done.

Sorry for the "whiney" sound to it but I need something to tell my guys :)

Thanks for letting us fly with you guys as guests Wotan.

I pretty much echo what you said. I love the TODs, and was real excited to fly in my first one in a few months. It was pretty disappointing to lose my wing after I was 3k below the buff I made a pass on. I'm not sure what the problem was, because the area we were in was pretty empty.

Your concerns are understandable Wotan.  I posted a week or so in advance for players to get the updated terrain.   There were two other posts throghout the week and an e-mail from Ghostdancer mentioning it.

There should have been no downloads Friday night and to avoid future laggy, warpy events hopefully all players will get the download well in advance.

As for the 32 plane limit.  I was under the impression, but cannot for the life of me remember where I read it, that the 32 icon limit was addressed after Big Week and no longer existed.  It seems from what I read during the event and on the board that I was mistaken.

I am making some changes to the frame that will hopefully not have so many planes in one spot, but I am not going to micro-manage the frame CO's and tell them how many to send where.  That would leave me open for a flamfest big time.

daddog is talking to Pyro this week and I will ask him to look into the connection issues.  From my experience BoB ran fine for me, and I have no idea about last night because I was in CM mode and not flying.

Thanks for the input and we'll try and fix what we can.

My guess is its AHV. I've never seen so much lagging before, even with bigger numbers and similar numbers of people rolling. The variance track on my netstat was a nightmare.

It's the fact that HTC still hasn't been able to secure the upgrade for the SEA pipe.  You've got 400+ people in the MA all using AHV and very little mass warping.  The SEA can't even handle 1/2 of that without warping right now.  Hopefully they will be able to address this soon.  :(

What Nifty said.  Unless the SEA is on a different, less capable host machine altogether too.  Because it is a major problem imo also. One serious enough thatr IMO it could have a long term, detrimental effect on event participation, especially scenarios, as AH starts getting a rep for having events that aren't reliable.  The problem really tainted my experience in the last major scenario.

I was however very glad to get online again for a TOD with the MAG33. But the problem still made it a love-hate event for me. The 190's just popped into view too late to really do anything about them and when I ended my frame gunning for 10bears I was unable to focus on the cons popping into view as they'd do it suddenly and when the were startling close.  The one time that I was lucky and happened to be looking in the right direction I had but a split second to be fire. Too little, too later as the 190 handily shot off half our B-17's wing.
