Need a little TAS to IAS conversation
« on: June 17, 2002, 03:53:43 AM »
I re-read a couple of my sources and to my surprise i found a confirmed dive speed test of the FW190 by the RAE in Farnborough.

The dive speed was given as 580mph TAS@16k, now i need a little conversation to IAS.

Btw, very interesting in that report was, that the english test pilot mentioned "slightly heavier control forces" than in normal flight, but plane didnt shake and was fully controlable, seems AH FW190 has different dive characteristics.

It's the RAE evaluation of an FW190A3. But that should not matter, as up to the FW190D15 the wings stayed the same.

I found some formula to convert the 580 mph TAS back to IAS.

Its about 440 mph IAS at 16k.

And if i remember the couples of divetest i did with the FW190 in AH, the controls in AH FW190 are far away from the british test pilot statement that the controls of the FW190 were "remarkably light" even at that speed.

Not hijacking a thread, but more trying to add to it. For a LW plane trying to dive away from a P47 meant death as the P47 was catching up with him.
In AH it's not really true, the 109/FW will out accelerate you so bad in a steep dive that it doesn't really recreate the WW2 LW worst evasive.
Dat jugs bro.

Frenchy have you considered the relative max speeds in a dive of a 109? The 109 does have initial accleration in AH ,and it should but the P47 roughly dives at the same speed of a 190A, in any case it shouldn't have any problems catching a 109. Now the 190D in AH does have everything in acceleration , Speed and power below 24k,  I think it might be able to pretty much out run everything here except the Lagg7 and Pony (Temp too).

You also might consider the  USAF in the ETO having an overwhelming numerical superiority and the lack of skill of the LW pilots by Mid '44 that led to the deaths of many. Non of which is a factor in Aces High unless of course a 190 decides to stroll around a raid by Jugs then it would get pretty much turned into charbroiled hamburger, and any other aircraft me thinks.
