Gentlemen,

I was not going to even reply here on this issue but it's obvious some of you don't understand that this can be considered by some to be very insensitive. I had a son that was born with Down's Syndrome.. he pasted away from complications with a congentital heart problem he was born with at birth. I loved him very much and would have loved to see him receive something like that for an accomplishment he made. Soviet, I was going to let it slide and then when others jumped in and said there wasn't anything wrong I thought I would just nicely write my oppion. I have to admit that over the years I have learned to tolerate IGNORANCE but if I had seen your post years ago I would have been inscenced! (My diffinition of IGNORANCE is not understanding the subject) I can see how some would be very put off but the post and those that would come in to defend it. But this kind of stuff hurts and digs up lots of stuff for some... This young man in the picture simply shows he was happy and proud to receive recongition for an accomplishment.. nothing more ...Lets plese drop this!...

dmdnexus,

I can cleary recognize the visual features of downes syndrome on that youngsters face.  For you to say that I am prejudging him is moronic.  No offense intended .

In any event, say whatever the hell you want.  I am totally put off by using visual images of obviously mentally retarded people to put across tastless humor.

Wheres that picture of shane? you know, the one where he uses a picture of himself to say in effect "STFU".  Now thats ok in my book.  I dont see any definate indications of mental retardation in his picture.

Yeager,

"I can cleary recognize the visual features"

That's the very definition of prejudice, man.

You have prejudged this person with out personally knowing him, just by the way he looks.

By that standard the police can arrest people because "they look like crooks".

Bank loan officers can deny loans to minorities, because "they look like they won't pay their bills".

Sheesh, come on get real.

OK.. here we go with foot in mouth awards... To be accurate, yes, assuming anyone with Down's is mentally retarded IS prejudging.  Very mild cases can show physical characteristics and physiological problems, with little effect on intellectual development, at least to the extent that is classically referred to as "retarded".  Yes, the more common cases are unfortunately more severe, and often include the tragic conditions to which Thunder referred.  The real point here is, if Soviet had put something like "Here ya go ya Retard" or something else equally as stupid, even if he meant it in jest, I would be elbowing my way to the front of the line to light the match as we burned him at the stake.  He did nothing of the sort.  Too much was made of too little, and now egos will not allow anyone to consider it.  Are we to forbid ever referring to these people unless we are talking about "oh those poor things..."?  I suggest that some of the fingers that seem to be pointing upright be pointed back at the owners.
If we argue against ignorance from an ignorant point of view, are we not equally as ignorant?

And again, more strongly this time.. ya wanna squeak about people being insensitive about the plight of others, start your own damn thread!  There, is that less eloquently, but more clearly stated?

Okay, but you can't say someone is white because they look white? Or someone is black because they have dark skin?

It's a phyical feature of the race... and Down's Syndrome most definitely has physical attributes that are clearly recognizable.

I had said something, which is why I posted nevermind, because I naturally assumed people would come along and say "ooooo that's prejudice"..

As far as I know, it's impossible to have the physical attributes of Down's Syndrome while not actually having the mental disabilities.

To be honest I never even thought the kid was retarded.  It is only that you bring it up that I think about it and still some people may even "look" retarded and not even be retarded.

I just put it in because I found it humour because I thought it was a kid getting overly excited for a little boyscout prize.  I mean I never meant any harm to retarded people.

Hell I don't even know the kids retarded.

Personally yeager saying he's retarded by the kids looks doesn't make any sence he may be he may not you just don't know that.

Hell on my block there's this guy who you would never think was retarded.  He's out living his life and is kind and everything.  He doesn't even show the physical signs of down syndrome but he is mentally retarded.  Looks don't tell everything.

You don't understand Soviet... mentally unabled? I dunno... whatever the "new" description is... isn't the same as Down's Syndrome.

Down's Syndrome is what Corky had... that guy who did that show and was in some "The More You Know" Infomercials on ABC or CBS or whatever...

It has BOTH physically identifiable attributes and reduced mental ability.

So this kid more than likely DOES have Down's Syndrome.
EDIT: Go here  and take a look at the picture at the bottom of the page. Look around on the links, you'll find the information about Down's Syndrome and what it is.

Gentlemen.. and I use the term loosely, for fear of assuming way too much in some cases... ya wanna start a Down's Syndrome thread, be my guest.  Ya wanna start a "Be Kind to Your Fellow Man" thread, be my guest.  Ya wanna start a "Let's label everyone who looks like such and such as being the same" thread, be my guest.  All of those involve starting your own damn thread that has to do with what you wanted it to be about.  But noooooooo.  Look at it like this.  Not all Down's folks are debilitated to the same degree, case in point, the one on TV vs. some who require permanent institutionalization vs. everything beyond and in between.  This applies to damn near every disease, disorder, defect, disability, whatever the hell you wanna discuss.  Get over it.  The fact that, God Forbid, someone posted a picture of someone who "looks retarded" (other people's choice of description) in a totally innocent manner does not justify the hypercritical, judgemental cluster f* that has occurred.  Flame wars, finger pointing, etc., always piss me off, as do people who take a very small thing and blow it out of proportion to make it their personal crusade.  But, what pisses me off even more is when some people pound the pulpit of righteousness in one thread, then act like an bellybutton toward someone in another, and think that their imaginary moral high ground justifies their ignorance.  Next time I find something humorous, I'll just share it with my squaddies.  At least I know they won't turn it into an Arrogant Opinion contest.  And Soviet, I appreciate the attempt at continuing the good natured, well intentioned humor.  Too bad some people just are incapable of seeing it.

I gotta agree about the lock request.  Too bad the thread originator can't do it, though this would be severely abused.  Here's a link to a myth/truth page answering a few commonquestions about DS.
The third myth/truth should just about resolve it, but then again, it probably won't.
