Who was that La5?
« on: June 19, 2002, 02:10:31 PM »
Was on the way back to my CV from A59 I believe it was when an La5 bounced me. Uh oh, here I am at 2k in a hellcat just barely over 250, at least 5 miles from the CV and not a friendly in sight. I'm a goner.

Luck prevailed and I was able to reverse him but it didn't do me any good. Only thing I coulda done was spit at him.

Should have come back La5. I had no ammo.

Nice fight.

Whenever I wonder who someone is, whether they impress me with skill or astonish me with utter lameness, I'll kick the film recorder on for a second or two and then run it in the AH Film Viewer later on to find out the name of the guilty party.  :)

Ok I can not tell a lie (at least I won't right now) I think that was me in the la-5.  If your cv was off p36, I had been flying cap over v40 for a while when I saw you.  I dropped down on you, thought I was going to eat your lunch but then you reversed.  Now if this was you you must have had a few rounds left cuz on the reverse you ping my right landing gear.   I started to come back for you but then noticed I only had about 30 rounds left and a little over a 1/16th of a tank of fuel.  So with about 20 miles to get back A39 and a cv to avoid, I decided it was time to RTB.

By the way, with the runway in site I did run out of fuel.  I was a dead stick on landing and came in a bit to hot.  About half way down the runway I touched down, bounced, touched again and my right gear colapsed.  I ended up spinning around on the runway and stopped within a couple of feet of the end.  The whole time I was thinking that if I slid off the end you would get the kill when I ditched.  Anyway real nice reverse, salute, it was a lot of fun.

He would have if you were in his territory (enemy).  Theres an "imaginary" friendly/enemy boundary around each field, if you ditch within friendly territory, without the con close to you, you get a ditch..however if he's relatively close, he gets the kill or..if you ditch in his territory (enemy) he gets the kill no matter how close he is to you (the above is all assuming the enemy hit you with gunfire)
