...find old Beta setup (with sector counters only) more fun than inflight radar we have right now ?

It was so fun to know enemy is somewhere in the sector, but having to work to find him. It also made possible sneaky attacks deep inside enemy territory, while now this is always a suicide.

So, IMO, sector counters yes, inflight radar no.

what do you think ?

Inflight radar can be disabled, locally by killing the dish at the field, and globally by killing HQ.  We whine about not having enough STRAT in the game, then ignore what we have.  Confusing, eh?

I'm with popeye on this one.

But for scenarios and such, I think only guys on the ground should get the radar, calling directions for their individual flights.  That'd be cool for a BoB scenario

I find old way looots better.

Though, I would trade away that sector counter for only dot radar that can be disabled by hammering the field enough.

IMO, sector counter is what ruins the fun more on my part than laser radar which does not detect objects below radar altitude like sector counter.

I like the old WB radar in the tower only. This made people stay in the tower and vector people to where the enemy was.  That was a HUGE immersion factor for me.  Having to rely on somebody elses vectorring abilities adds a bit of stress when aproaching a fight

Hristo;

Another re-run discussion from the early days, but a very good one to re-hash.

Personally, the in-flight radar was a very welcome addition to the game when it first appeared in Beta.  Keep in mind that at that time I was still really trying to learn how to be moderately successful in the game.

I can't say that I really enjoyed searching for a cons for 45 minutes to an hour and a half.  This is after reaching the sector that the hostile was flying in only to find it by hearing pings -or- just to find another friendly.  The in-flight radar really helped to increase the pace of the of game.

This will be true for any "New" player now as was for me then.  New customers = HTC revenue, so I feel a balance must be acheived.  I doubt that HTC wants to bore their new customers and have them quit before they become regular customers.

However.....

I do agree with you, now that I have become more experienced, that I would like to see some modifications to in-flight radar and sector bar counters.

But...

These modifications must be balanced.
Pace of Play vs Ambush Excitement.
Group Communitive Play vs Lone Wolf Tactics.
    New Players vs Experienced Players.
    Airborne Targets vs Ground Targets.

There can be many more reasons.  Pace of Play Balance being, by far, the most crucial.

To yet be more verbose.....

I think that I would like:
    Reduced Icon Ranges
Remove the "Plane Type" from hostile Icons
    Remove the In-flight radar
Make sub-sectors 1/4 the size of each sector
    Give sub-sectors individual bar counters
Airborne and Ground vehicles to have seperate bar counters
Togglable bar counters on the map

Additionally...

It might be nice to know who your are actually facing.  The more succesfull hostile pilots get 1 to 5 stars on their Icon.  A five star Icon for "Hotshit" opponents.  This feature to engage at range d999.

If you got this far.  Thanks for reading and Good Luck!
