GRRRRRR what wold you do?
« on: June 23, 2002, 05:39:12 PM »
i took my 1999 pontiac grand am in for service this past thursday morning.  there was a minor oil leak from the lower intake manifold.  it is under warranty still so i decided to get it fixed.

anyway...i had one of those cd car walkmans in the back seat that i listen to at work in those down times when there is nothing to do.  The day after i got the car back i went to grab my walkman and it was gone!!!!!

my girlfriend and myself were the only ones in the car after picking it up and i always lock my doors and roll up my windows when ever i park the car. so it couldnt have been lifted from my car on the day that i got it back.

sooooooooooo....... what the heck would you do?  obviously im going to talk to the service manager asap. but situations like this can be a real headache.  The main thing being that i did not notice it right away before i left the dealership, but i never thought that one of the techs would have the balls or lack of brains to do something like this.

i also know that it is my own stupid fault for leaving valuable items in my car when i take it in for service (the walkman is worth about 250 dollars.)

-one pissed off loser.

Sorry to hear it Loser.  The theft problem at car dealerships is endemic in our area. Very frustrating, and hard to solve unless you get lucky.

This happens at all the major dealers. Thier mechanics and other employees rip off anything that the customer leaves in the car. (Then the dealers rip you off again as you leave, with thier price gouging) I swear I hate these dealerships, the way they treat people. They are fully aware of the problem, but don't go far enough to warn the customers... might be bad for buisness. :(

File a police report anyway. Your insurance might cover the loss.

Sorry man, basically you're screwed.
You left valuables in the car. Then didn't notify them it was there when you dropped the car off, or that it wasn't there when you picked it up.
It sux, and probably one of the guys did lift it. I doubt it was the guy who actually worked on your car (nobody would want a pattern of the cars the worked on to come up with property missing) but it could have been anybody from the security guard at night to the guy who sweeps up.
And bottom line you can't prove it was there, and you can't prove it wasn't there when you picked up.

So I'd guess the service manager will act very concerned and sympathetic, then swear that he'll check around and if one of his guys took it he'll get to the bottom of the problem while reminding you that the shop can't be liable and this sort of thing has NEVER happened in his shop before.  Then him and the guys will go have a laugh at your expense, or if he's a decent guy he'll talk to his guys and they will all deny any knowledge, and in the end it's all the same, you'll not get your player back.

if you READ the work order you signed , it says the garage is NOT responsible for items left in car, it is unfortunate but things like that happen, best thing to do is find a garage and tech you trust and go there.

File a police report? All cops are on the take and are in fact probably covering if not running the local theft rings. Each police precinct is a mini-mafia with officers that plant evidence, steal, extort, and even murder every chance they get.

\sarcasm mode off

Painting with a broad brush isn't too nice Guntr... I happen to work at a major dealership (Porsche, Audi, Nissan) and must chime in that there is not a theft problem. I am not so naive to say that there is not a theft problem is SOME dealerships, but to make a blanket statement like that is an insult. I have seen service managers take immediate action, an entire washrack crew was fired over a rap CD and a technician (young and stupid) was led away in handcuffs for taking a quite expensive flashlight(those were when I was working at a Chrysler dealership). I have also seen a customer foaming at the mouth in the service drive over her "stolen cellphone" only to have it ring inside her purse and had a customer call in 2 MONTHS after a major service accusing us of stealing $10 in change out of his ashtray. In each complaint that seems to have some validity the service manager has at least questioned everyone who came in contact with the vehicle... but he's an ex-cop and really gets into that stuff. The majority of dealership workers care about their jobs and the work they do. How would you feel if EVERY person you dealt with while on the job received a survey in the mail asking to RATE YOU on how you performed your job and met their satisfaction? We are walking on pins and needles constantly especially because our job security is directly linked to those surveys.

As for the price gouging, well, I agree. The industry likes this neat little gimmick called "grid-pricing" for labor. Basically, it charges more per labor hour than what the posted labor rate is. When asking about labor rates you may hear something like "We have a labor grid based on a $79.00 per hour rate." In our dealership, 1 labor hour is truly $79, then 2 labor hours goes to $173.01, and all the way up to $97 per labor hour after 4 hours. I freaking hate that system and wish it could be removed.

All said, it is not easy being a service advisor or technician and at time I feel like walking out the door and going back to hotel work (used to run a Shoney's Inn). Remember that we are people too and have good days and bad days.

My apologies, Dmdbt/Lonz. Of course you are correct.  But let me explain my post...

We have about 8 or 9 dealerships in our area. When I posted, I was anxious to explain that it wasn't any one dealer where this happened more than others. This was in the spirit of accuracy. I don't want to point the finger at a single dealer, because it happens at all of them in our jurisdiction. I didn't mean to imply that ALL dealerships world wide have this problem. I have a lot of respect for you guys in that biz. Its a hard line of work to be in, and I know there's nothing worse than being blamed for something you didn't do.

Loser, I think your girlfriend is supporting a secret drug addiction by ripping off your stuff and pawning it. Insist she take a polygraph test and a drug test. If she refuses then leave her.
