They used 3 110's, worked OK but once all planes crashed, killing all involved including a number of soldiers...

worked OK?

When it works good or great no accidents happen. To use 3 110's worked on most occasions thus OK, when something happaned it happaned BAD though. Once the HE111 Z arrived it worked good. Then the 6 engine version arrived and it worked even better.

I wonder if you could just push a 20,000 pound bomb out of the back of it...

I believe the Me 323 came about when somebody in the LW got the idea to take the original glider version (the Me 321) and slap four low-powered French surplus radials on it.  It couldn't take off by itself at full load--it'd still need towplane(s)--but it could fly home on its own power after dropping off its cargo, and admittedly having some power available would make gliding it in much easier.

But in the end it was easier to put six engines on it and make it self-sufficient.

if you want a big transport, how about a spruce goose? i saw it at the evergreen air museum a few weeks ago.  Gerald Johnson's P-38L was parked next to it.  I think if you retracted the P-38's gear you could fit it inside the Spruce Goose's rudder... I think the goose was supposed to carry 800 troops
